Rome Replaces Sardinia as Italy’s WRC Round from 2027

Hello everyone :)!

The FIA and WRC Promoter have confirmed a big change for the World Rally Championship: from 2027, Italy’s WRC round will move from Sardinia to the capital city of Rome. Sardinia will remain part of top level rallying, but as a round of the European Rally Championship (ERC) :(

Why the Change?

• Since 2004, Rally Italia Sardegna has been a regular stop on the WRC calendar, famous for its tough gravel roads, punishing heat, and beautiful landscapes.

• Rally di Roma Capitale has been part of the ERC since 2017. The event has grown and proved it has the infrastructure and interest to host WRC.

• The Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) signed a deal with FIA and WRC Promoter ensuring that from 2027 until at least 2030 (if i recall correctly?) Rally Italia will take place in Rome. Sardinia will shift permanently to the ERC during this period.

What Rome Will Bring

Asphalt stages: Unlike Sardinia’s gravel tests, stages around Lazio (the region surrounding Rome) focus on tarmac, demanding precise driving and different setups.

Iconic setting: In previous editions of Rally di Roma, superspecial stages were held near landmarks such as the Colosseum, giving rallying an impressive showcase in the heart of Italy’s capital.

Preparation time: The change is set for 2027, allowing organizers time to complete all necessary infrastructure, permits, and safety adjustments. Sardinia will continue as a WRC round until 2026.

Both rallies will continue to have an important place in international rallying.

I will definitely miss Sardinia a lot its wild gravel, heat, and unique character made it unforgettable.
