Go Down Old Hannah [Cane on the Brazos]

This is one of the prettiest old tunes I know. There was no more dangerous work than chopping cane in Texas. This is a slow song that carries a whole lot of meaning. I learned it from someone who learned it from the Band, who learned it off an old record, sung by people working in the fields; whose average lifespan after starting that work was 9 years.
