Don't Wait Until It's Too Late: Celebrate Your Parents Now
How do we celebrate the lives of our parents, is it after they are dead or when they are still alive and well with us?
In Africa, and Nigeria particularly, we attach more importance to funerals than to living ceremonies. Most of the time, the money spent on a single-day burial ceremony is enough for a normal person to live for the entire rest of his or her life. Moreover, there are people who go as far as taking loans for the sole purpose of having an extravagant funeral for their aged parents, something they have never done in that way while they were alive.
We spend a huge amount of the money on hiring traditional dancers and musicians to perform at burial ceremonies, but if that money could have been used to take good care of the elderly parents, life would have been better for mothers and fathers. Giving them a good life is the best way of celebrating parents, and we should not see it differently.
A life celebration should not be when a person is gone. It should actually be the number one thing that people are seeking and looking forward to every day. If a parent has suffered through raising his children with the sole purpose that they become successful in life, then those children should be the first to celebrate their parents, not at the time of parents death but while they are still alive.
People always talk about what they are going to do when their parents are no more. They claim that they are going to have such a fantastic funeral service that the whole world is going to talk about it. I always ask such people why they do not do it while their parents are still alive. Most of the pains and sorrows in this world are borne by parents, and we should celebrate them while they are still alive to get rid of all their pains. Parents do everything to make sure that their kids are successful in life, but most of the time, they are so frustrated by the kids who are full of selfishness and lack of love.
The majority of young people do not realize the value of their parents. They behave as though they have been acquainted with them forever. Such people generally forget that their parents have suffered a lot for their sake. A lot of parents have to face the situation when they are left on their own even when they become old.
Today I was invited to a surprise birthday party for my elder brother. It was a very special birthday celebration because the children had never before informed their father about any birthday party for him. One of the children gave me the information a day before and told me how they planned to surprise their father. The kids decided to do for their father what they would do if he was dead.
For him, they created a huge and luxurious birthday party that was crowded with a great number of people. The way they pulled off such a smooth event really amazed me a lot. No one from the family was ready when they saw the music system, the chairs, and the people coming into the yard, so it was a very big surprise for all of us.
A band was playing live, food was served and drinks were made available for all the attendees of the event. Such an extraordinary event made me lose my words, still, I tried my best to be part of the celebrations with my brother. The father was the center of the celebration, not the children. They dance, throw money on their dad and praise him for all the good things he has done to them. The children are not the ones to be praised; it is the dad who deserves it most. He was always very supportive of his kids no matter the situation.
After expressing himself so emotionally, there were a lot more people who went out to dance with him. It all looked as if everyone was going to hold a very big party just for him. This example should be a lesson for everyone who still has parents. We have to provide them with the time and care that will erase all the pains that they bear because of us and take them up to their highest dreams. Most of the time, it makes them be in the center of their worlds. Therefore, we must show our parents our appreciation in any manner we find suitable as long as they are alive. Allow them to experience the love and honor that they are worthy of.
They have given enough to make us the people that we are and therefore, we owe them; the debt must be settled. And the best thing that we can do for them is to celebrate while they are still breathing them and enjoy every bit of it. In this manner, at their death, they will be very happy that they have lived a very good life and that they haven’t wasted their efforts.
