On September 24, 2025, the animated series Marvel Zombies arrived on Disney+, expanding the universe introduced in the episode What If… Zombies?! of the anthology series What If… Directed by Bryan Andrews and written by Zeb Wells, this four-episode miniseries has generated debate among critics and fans about its tone, pacing, and faithfulness to the original premise.

The series takes up the premise of an Earth devastated by a zombie virus, where a group of survivors, mostly heroes from Phases 4 and 5 of the MCU (Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Riri Williams, Shang-Chi, among others), search for a way to stop the plague. The great threat is the zombified and all-powerful Wanda Maximoff, the Queen of the Dead.

La serie retoma la premisa de una Tierra devastada por un virus zombie, donde un grupo de supervivientes, en su mayoría héroes de las Fases 4 y 5 del MCU (Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Riri Williams, Shang-Chi, entre otros), buscan una forma de detener la plaga. As a miniseries, it's highly entertaining and visually stunning at its best, where you can turn off your brain and not ask any questions about the MCU and its underlying timeline. Ignoring all that offers bloody action and a chance to see new MCU heroes in a brutal, no-holds-barred setting. However, its rushed pacing and tonal indecision prevent it from reaching its full potential, leaving it feeling like a fun but shallow adventure that doesn't dare explore the depths its survival horror premise could offer.

Como una miniserie es muy entretenida y visualmente impresionante en sus mejores momentos donde se puede apagar el cerebro y no hacer preguntas sobre el MCU y su línea temporal en que se basa, si ignoras todo eso te ofrece acción sangrienta y la oportunidad de ver a nuevos héroes del MCU en un escenario brutal y sin restricciones. One of the biggest points of criticism is the narrative's pacing. With only four short episodes, the series feels rushed and doesn't give the characters or plot time to fully develop.

The casting of characters seems like a strategic move to promote the new heroes of the MCU and generate fanservice, rather than telling a zombie story more faithful to the spirit of the comics. The series feels like an extension of the main cinematic universe, missing the opportunity to be a bold, independent work. Although the animation has a mature and violent tone, the narrative focuses on showing characters or different variables of this world, which makes it harder to follow the story compared to the comics where you know who each character is because they are known here if you are not up to date with most of the series and films, having all the characters fresh in your memory can be difficult to recognize.

La elección de personajes parece un movimiento estratégico para promocionar a los nuevos héroes del MCU y generar fanservice, en lugar de contar la historia de zombies más fiel al espíritu del cómic. La serie se siente como una extensión del universo cinematográfico principal, perdiendo la oportunidad de ser una obra independiente y audaz. If you decide not to ignore all the questions in the series with its need to show so many characters, it leaves us with many questions like: how did Ikaris and Captain Marvel get infected? Why are they fighting? How are the Nova Corps so organized if Thanos had to destroy them in his search for the Infinity Gems? How did Thanos get infected? Why did he get to Wakanda if the gem wasn't there? Why did it take Wanda so long to look for Khamala or try to defeat Hulk if she could have done it before the season jump of 5 years of the series and the most important thing, why give this story to Zeb Wells?

• It shows that it's been 5 years since it was created, that it's not as chaotic as in the comics and that several groups have survived.

• They show the beginning of the disaster near Ant-man's laboratory, which is supposedly the point where the Zombie contagion and the release of Pym particles originated, increasing the chaos.

• The Plot twists although the series follows a single constant with the comics and that is that everything can and will always get worse in the series, it is entertaining to see how everything gets complicated for the characters even when it seems for 5 seconds that it isn't.

• Despite complaints about the series being just fan service, it is entertaining to see the heroes being more violent, something that is harder to see in the movies with a Spiderman tearing off limbs or Blade cutting up zombies.

• A pesar de las quejas de la serie ser solo fan service es entretenido ver a los héroes siendo mas violento cosa que es más difícil ver en el cine con un Spiderman arrancando extremidades o Blade cortando zombies.

OPINION

As a series it can be defined as entertaining but it doesn't explore anything else and much of the plot can be summed up as the Queen of the Dead did it, with an open and unsatisfactory ending with many questions, to be resolved in future seasons that possibly won't be made or that will arrive in years where the MCU has already changed the main characters or restarted it, but let's hope that with much of the production already done in this season another season will be announced soon and better by firing Zeb Wells and bringing in someone who will carry the story where it explores the same themes as the comics.

Como serie se puede definir cómo entretenida pero no explora nada más y mucho del argumento se puede resumir en la Reina de los muertos lo hizo, con un final abierto e insatisfactorio con muchas interrogantes, como para resolverlas en próximas temporadas que posiblemente no se hagan o que lleguen dentro de años donde el MCU ya haya cambiado a los personajes principales o lo reinicien, pero esperemos que con ya con mucho de la producción hecha en esta temporada se anuncie pronto otra temporada y mejor despidiendo a Zeb Wells y trayendo a alguien que si lleve la historia donde si explore los mismos temas que los comics.
