It's still summer, and it's very hot, so when we're at home relaxing in the cool air and want to watch a movie, we might choose one related to the sea. But there are many types, and we might think of crazy vacations or sharks on the beach or something like that, or a bit of everything, a mix of intense suspense and vacation. Italian vacations, along the coast and on a boat or better a vacation yacht.
I've also seen this Italian movie like that on Amazon Prime Video, and what TV show am I talking about? This TV show is called The Boat (a very common name, that it was been translated as "Alta Mar" in Spanish) and it's about a vacation with three Italian couples that promises to be fun and sophisticated, but everything changes when they wake up in the middle of the sea. What happens? Well I would like to share my review (and surprise) with you after watching it.
Let's tell something about this TV show. Here my review:
What is this about?
As I said, it's a film about three Italian couples, two of them quite established and a third who have just started together recently. The friends want to meet this new (and young) girl their school friend brings to the boat. They're all successful, especially in business, although the latter was helped by the other two in the past to prosper, and they plan to enjoy a few carefree summer days at sea. All six of them. A typical vacation at sea, but with a high level of quality, on their own yacht along those beautiful Italian coasts.
A thriller that surprises, because it seems like it will simply be a movie about some posh guys having fun at parties on their boat while things happen between them, but in reality, the script surprises us when he wakes up from one of those crazy parties. What happened? Nothing to do with sharks or anything like that, it's something else, more elaborate, I would say with malice aforethought... Although I don't want to reveal too much so as not to throw away spoilers... But it has to do with something at the beginning of the movie, because the beginning, the first few minutes are strange, different, then, at the end, we'll understand everything.
The characters
The actors aren't well-known, none of them, at least not for me. Well, I saw the youngest, blondest, unknown girl in another Italian series called "Black Out - Vite sospese". Italians who see this film might recognize more actors, but in any case, I think they play a good role, especially the one who represents the "surprise factor" we didn't expect, that is, the one who turns that luxury vacation into an unimaginable nightmare...
And we can also see the character development of these characters, what distinguishes them all, for example, from the other younger girl, or how the other two women talk to each other versus the third. Or how the three men talk about the past, or about business, or about women. But while they suffer this nightmare, they also discover secrets, about themselves and about others. That's very interesting, because the past is key to why what happens to them happens.
Anything else to comment?
Yes, or rather, it's what we thought it would be, but in the end, it turns out to be a full-blown thriller. It all starts out meaninglessly, then everything seems to be what we thought it would be: the five friends and a new addition reunite on one of their yachts to enjoy a few wild moments at sea. And after jumping to the sea and much uninhibited partying, they wake up to a real bad dream instead of a pleasant luxury vacation aboard The Boat.
Finally, I'd like to add that thrillers or these types of films don't always have to be American. We know that most of the productions we find, especially now on these types of platforms, are American. But we also find others from other countries that can also be very good and interesting, like this Italian one, for example. This way, we get to know more about reality, more actors, and different ways of creating TV shows and movies.
