Hoy les traigo una nueva reseña cinematográfica, esta vez sobre una nueva serie que estoy viendo y que me ha llamado mucho la atención. Se trata de la serie recién estrenada el pasado 1 de agosto en la plataforma Apple TV+: "El gran guerrero" (Chief of War).

**¿Qué podemos encontrar en esta serie?:**
Se trata de una producción que, a mi apreciación, es lo bastante ambiciosa, conformada por nueve episodios que redefine el género histórico épico y centrándose en la unificación de las islas hawaianas de a finales del siglo XVIII. Como dato curioso, les cuento que esta serie fue creada, escrita, en parte dirigida y también protagonizada, por nada más y nada menos que el actor Jason Momoa, quien es nacido en Honolulu por lo que tiene ascendencia hawaiana.
La serie ofrece al espectador una perspectiva indígena magistralmente auténtica, sobre un capítulo olvidado de la historia polinesia. Ambientada en un archipiélago dividido en reinos rivales como Oʻahu, Maui y Hawaiʻi, narra la saga de Kaʻiana, un jefe guerrero que es interpretado por Momoa, quien se une a la campaña de Kamehameha para unir las islas ante la inminente amenaza de la colonización europea.

Dirigida por talentosos cineastas, como Justin Chon y Brian Mendoza, contó además con un presupuesto estimado de 340 millones de dólares, lo que de cierta manera nos hace recordar otros materiales similares de impacto, como Juego de tronos o Shōgun.
**Lo que más me ha gustado de la serie:**
Confieso que desde el primer episodio de la serie, quedé de cierta manera cautivado con esta inmersión cultural, por su majestuosa autenticidad. Hablada mayoritariamente en ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (idioma nativo hawaiano), permite al espectador sumergirse en un mundo ajeno al occidental. Sobre este detalle, estuve leyendo que solo un 20% del elenco hablaba fluidamente este idioma inicialmente.

Mientras que el resto, incluyendo el propio Momoa, aprendieron desde cero para garantizar la autenticidad que se puede apreciar en este material. Hawái, como ya sabemos, es reconocida por ser todo un paraíso turístico; sin embargo, la serie evita que sea catalizada en ese sentido, mostrando, en cambio, una sociedad en armonía de la tierra con el mar.
Acá se pueden apreciar los rituales ancestrales, tatuajes tradicionales y ceremonias que para nada son adornos estéticos, sino pilares del poder y la identidad. "El gran guerrero" tiene su punto fuerte en lo visual, logrando aprovechar todo el paisaje natural de estas tierras y logrando todo un espectáculo.

La cinematografía logra capturar toda la majestuosidad de estas islas: llamando la atención con las olas rompiendo contra los acantilados volcánicos, selvas exuberantes y océanos infinitos, que hacen que los seres humanos parezcan pequeñas pinceladas en este lienzo natural.
No puedo concluir este artículo, sin antes mencionar las escenas de batallas que fueron logradas en la serie. Las mismas son genialmente crudas y gráficas: con excelentes coreografías de combates cuerpo a cuerpo con lanzas, a mi entender de lo mejor de la serie.

**Comentario final:**
Mucho más que ofrecer un mero entretenimiento, creo que "El gran guerrero" logra magistralmente trascender, basándose en su elegía a una cultura silenciada durante siglos, por la colonización. Sobresale ante un panorama televisivo saturado de relatos eurocéntricos; en parte del éxito es por estar asesorada por historiadores hawaianos.
Permitiéndole de esta manera reescribir la historia, pero con respeto, fuerza y honrando la memoria indígena de estas tierras. Si viste Shōgun y te transportó al Japón medieval, "El gran guerrero" hace lo propio con el Pacífico pre colonial. Es un material televisivo que se hace completamente imperdible y recomendable para los amantes de la historia y el drama.

Today I bring you a new movie review, this time about a new series I'm watching that has really caught my attention. It's the series that premiered on August 1 on Apple TV+: "Chief of War."
What can we find in this series?
It is a production that, in my opinion, is quite ambitious, confirmed by nine episodes that redefine the historical epic genre and focus on the unification of the Hawaiian islands in the late 18th century. As a curious fact, I can tell you that this series was created, written, partly directed, and also starred in by none other than actor Jason Momoa, who was born in Honolulu and is of Hawaiian descent.
The series offers viewers a masterfully authentic indigenous perspective on a forgotten chapter of Polynesian history. Set in an archipelago divided into rival kingdoms such as Oʻahu, Maui, and Hawaiʻi, it tells the saga of Kaʻiana, a warrior chief played by Momoa, who joins Kamehameha's campaign to unite the islands in the face of the imminent threat of European colonization.
Directed by talented filmmakers such as Justin Chon and Brian Mendoza, it also had an estimated budget of $340 million, which in a way reminds us of other similar high-impact productions such as Game of Thrones or Shōgun.
What I liked most about the series:
I confess that from the first episode of the series, I was somewhat captivated by this cultural immersion, due to its majestic authenticity. Spoken mainly in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (the native Hawaiian language), it allows the viewer to immerse themselves in a world foreign to the Westerner. On this detail, I was reading that only 20% of the cast spoke this language fluently initially.
While the rest, including Momoa himself, learned from scratch to ensure the authenticity that can be appreciated in this material. Hawaii, as we know, is renowned for being a tourist paradise; however, the series avoids focusing on this aspect, instead showing a society in harmony with the land and the sea.
Here we can appreciate ancestral rituals, traditional tattoos, and ceremonies that are not merely aesthetic adornments, but pillars of power and identity. "The Great Warrior" has its strong point in the visuals, taking advantage of the natural landscape of these lands and creating a spectacular show.
The cinematography manages to capture all the majesty of these islands: drawing attention with waves crashing against volcanic cliffs, lush jungles, and endless oceans, which make human beings seem like small brushstrokes on this natural canvas.
I cannot conclude this article without first mentioning the battle scenes in the series. They are brilliantly raw and graphic, with excellent choreography of hand-to-hand combat with spears, which, in my opinion, are the best part of the series.
Final comment:
Much more than mere entertainment, I believe that "The Great Warrior" masterfully transcends, based on its elegy to a culture silenced for centuries by colonization. It stands out in a television landscape saturated with Eurocentric narratives; part of its success is due to the advice of Hawaiian historians.
This allows it to rewrite history, but with respect, strength, and honor for the indigenous memory of these lands. If you saw Shōgun and it transported you to medieval Japan, "Hawaii Five-0" does the same with the pre-colonial Pacific. It is television material that is completely unmissable and recommended for lovers of history and drama.
