Doña Bárbara - Review (Eng/Esp)

Novel: Doña Bárbara. Author: Rómulo Gallegos of Venezuelan nationality. Novel narrated about the life of a mysterious woman called Doña Bárbara. Written using concepts created and reproduced in the Venezuelan plains. Vocabulary spoken only by the people of the llano apureño. The novel is made of a narrative with many grammatical categories. It deals with the life, fundamentally, of three characters. Doña Bárbara, a woman who went through a series of very difficult vicissitudes when she was subjected as a hostage or a kind of slave, because even the possibility of being sold was exposed. After going through all that tragedy in her childhood, and part of her adolescence, she becomes a hard being with the interpretation that every man is guilty of his lived mistake.  Time goes by and she has an offspring, which she names Marisela, whose character is said to be the opposite of her mother's, being all sweetness, the very example of the pure, the divine. In spite of being the daughter of such a tremendous being as Doña Barbara, she does not have any perverse characteristic as the devourer of men, nicknames used by many locals to refer to Doña Barbara. The other character that makes a great impact in the narrative of Don Romulo Gallegos is Santos Luzardo, who was born and spent most of his childhood in one of the haciendas of Arauca, called Altamira. He was later taken to the city of Caracas to continue his studies and train for a better life. There he graduated as a lawyer and with the permanent idea of returning to his homeland in the land where he was born. He made the trip in a boat and received there any amount of information about what was happening on the grounds of his hacienda. Santos Luzardo's intention was to evaluate the situation of his ranch and see if it was possible to sell it. However, a 360-degree turn makes him reflect and he decides to rehabilitate the hacienda and the house that was in very bad condition. From then on, many unpleasant and not so unpleasant events took place that led him to rethink the way to take care of such delicate matters.  It can be seen in the structure of the novel, which has three parts set, as I mentioned before, in the Venezuelan plains of Apure State and on the banks of the Arauca River. Definitely in this novel, masterfully done by Don Romulo Gallegos, a struggle between the advanced level of social and cultural development, and the contradiction as cruelty and fierceness is highlighted.

Escrita usando conceptos creados y reproducidos en el llano venezolano. Vocabulario que solo lo hablan las personas del llano apureño. La novela está hecha de una narrativa con muchas categorías gramaticales. Trata la vida, fundamentalmente, de tres personajes. Doña Bárbara, mujer que sus tiempos de moza pasa por una serie de vicisitudes muy difíciles donde es sometida como rehén o especie de esclava, porque hasta la posibilidad de ser vendida fue expuesta. Luego de pasar por toda aquella tragedia en su infancia, y parte de su adolescencia se convierte en un ser duro con la interpretación de que todo hombre es culpable de su error vivido.  Así transcurre el tiempo y llega a tener un retoño, al cual le coloca por nombre Marisela, de cuyo carácter se dice que es todo lo contrario a su madre, siendo toda dulzura, el propio ejemplo de lo puro, de lo divino. Que a pesar de ser hija de un ser tan tremendo como Doña Bárbara no tiene ninguna característica perversa como la devoradora de hombres, apelativos que usaron muchos lugareños para referirse a Doña Bárbara. El otro personaje que impacta mucho en la narrativa de Don Rómulo Gallegos es Santos Luzardo, quien nació y vio la mayor parte de su infancia en una de las haciendas del Arauca, llamada Altamira. Que luego es llevado a a la ciudad de Caracas, para continuar estudios y formarse para una vida mejor. Allí se gradúa de abogado y con la idea permanente de regresar a su terruño en la tierra que lo vio nacer. El viaje lo realiza en una lancha y recibe allí cualquier cantidad de información de lo que está ocurriendo en los predios de su hacienda. La empresa que pretendía Santos Luzardo era de evaluar la situación de su hacienda y ver la posibilidad de venderla. Sin embargo, un giro de 360 grados lo hace reflexionar y decide rehabilitar la hacienda y la casa que se encontraba en muy mal estado. De allí en lo sucesivo ocurre muchos eventos desagradables y otros no tanto que lo conducen a replantearse la forma de atender esos asuntos tan delicados.  Se aprecia en la estructura de la novela que tiene tres partes ambientadas, como les puse anteriormente, en los llanos venezolano del estado Apure y a orillas del río Arauca. Definitivamente en esta novela, magistralmente hecha por Don Rómulo Gallegos, se destaca una lucha entre el nivel avanzado de desarrollo social y cultural, y la contradicción como la crueldad y la fiereza.
