Hello, hello✨ Did you know that just a couple of hours from Caracas you can find yourself in a place that looks like a German village straight out of a postcard? Well, yes, Colonia Tovar welcomes you with its cold climate, little houses with pointed roofs, and a European feel hidden among the mountains. The great adventure of this little trip is that we got there by public transportation (quite an odyssey that I will detail later). The truth is that I had already visited this town about ten years ago, but coming back now felt like it was the first time. In this decade, the vivid colors, picturesque streets, and atmosphere full of tradition have expanded💫

Hello, hello✨ ¿Sabían que a solo un par de horas de Caracas puedes terminar en lo más parecido a un pueblo alemán sacado de una postal? Pues sí, la Colonia Tovar te recibe con su clima frío, casitas de techos puntiagudos y un aire europeo escondido entre las montañas. La gran aventura de este pequeño viaje está en que llegamos allá en transporte público (toda una odisea que les detallaré más adelante)😬 Lo cierto es que ya había visitado este pueblo hace unos diez años, aproximadamente, pero volver ahora se sintió como si fuera la primera vez, debido a que en esta década se han expandido esos colores tan vivos, sus calles pintorescas, y su ambiente lleno de tradición💫

A bit of history📖

One of the most fascinating things about Colonia Tovar is how, in the middle of the Venezuelan mountains, specifically in the Cordillera de la Costa, a tradition that came from the heart of Europe is kept alive ✨ This story begins in 1843, when a group of German immigrants from Kaiserstuhl decided to cross the ocean in search of new opportunities. Like all immigrants, they left their homeland with dreams, customs, and hopes, and after weeks at sea, they finally arrived on the beaches of Choroní, Aragua State. However, it was not all joy, as there were outbreaks of smallpox on the ship, and they had to undergo quarantine (in fact, on my trip to Choroní last year, I learned about this story because there is a place where they commemorate the arrival of these Germans). Once they had recovered, they climbed the mountains until they reached the land donated by Manuel Felipe Tovar, where they settled and founded their colony, which was named Tovar.

Un poco de historia📖

Una de las cosas más fascinantes de la Colonia Tovar es la manera en que en medio de las montañas venezolanas, específicamente en la Cordillera de la Costa, se mantiene viva una tradición que vino desde el corazón de Europa ✨ Esta historia comienza en 1843, cuando un grupo de inmigrantes alemanes de Kaiserstuhl decidió cruzar el océano en busca de nuevas oportunidades. Como todo inmigrante, salieron de sus tierras con sueños, costumbres y esperanzas, y luego de semanas en altamar finalmente llegaron a las playas de Choroní, Estado Aragua. Sin embargo, no todo fue alegría, dado que en el barco había brotes de viruela y tuvieron que realizar una cuarentena (de hecho, en mi viaje a Choroní el año pasado, conocí esta historia porque hay un espacio donde conmemoran la llegada de estos alemanes). Una vez recuperados, subieron las montañas, hasta llegar a las tierras donadas por Manuel Felipe Tovar, donde se asentaron y fundaron su colonia que recibió el nombre de Tovar.

It's interesting how this small colony not only preserved its European essence, but also became a refuge for these immigrants. To this day, those German roots can still be felt in every corner; their traditions live on in their fruit crops: strawberries, peaches, and apples🍓🍑🍏, in the production of coffee, wine, chocolate, and, of course, craft beer🍺 Walking through these streets is like seeing a small part of Germany flourish in Venezuela, but with the Latin warmth that makes it special.

Es interesante cómo esta pequeña colonia no solo conservó su esencia europea, sino que también se convirtió en un refugio para estos inmigrantes. Hasta la actualidad, se siguen sintiendo esas raíces alemanas en cada rincón; sus tradiciones siguen vivas en sus cultivos de frutas: fresas, duraznos y manzanas🍓🍑🍏, en la producción de café, vino, chocolate y, por supuesto, cerveza artesanal🍺 Caminar por estas calles es como ver una pequeña parte de Alemania florecer en Venezuela, pero con la calidez latina que lo hace especial.

My journey and experiences☀️

We arrived at noon, ready for lunch, and yes, I would have loved to eat something more... German, but we had a lot of plans, and the best option was to save money. So, we ordered some cachapas with cheese and a malta (a drink you can't miss) at La Sazón de Mamá restaurant. Final verdict? They were some of the best cachapas I've ever had in my life! You have no idea how delicious they were💜 Now, you should be prepared to pay for tourist tours of the area, since the sites are scattered throughout the mountains, and it is best to go with someone who knows the Colonia. Right there, at the restaurant, we paid for a short tour of four sites because we were short on time to return to Caracas. However, there is a list of different locations, some long tours and some short, some extreme and others more family-friendly, and different production sites where you can taste their products. Here I explain which places I visited👇

Mi recorrido y experiencias☀️

Llegamos al mediodía, listos para almorzar, y sí, me hubiera encantado comer algo más... alemán, pero teníamos muchos planes, y la mejor opción era ahorrar el dinero. Por ende, ordenamos unas cachapas con queso y una malta (bebida que no puede faltar), en el restaurante La Sazón de Mamá. ¿Veredicto final? ¡Han sido una de las mejores cachapas que he probado en mi vida! No saben lo deliciosas que estaban💜 Ahora, deben ir preparados para costear los paseos turísticos del lugar, dado que los lugares están esparcidos por la montaña, y es mejor ir con alguien que conoce la Colonia. Allí mismo, en el restaurante, pagamos un paseo corto de cuatro lugares porque estábamos cortos de tiempo para volver a Caracas. Sin embargo, hay una lista de diversas ubicaciones, algunos recorridos largos y otros cortos, algunos extremos y otros más familiares, y distintos puntos de producción donde puedes degustar sus productos. Aquí les explico cuáles lugares visité👇

Chocolatico🍫 The first stop was Chocolatico, a place where the smell of cocoa envelops you as soon as you walk in🥰 There, they told us how cocoa is grown in nearby areas and, of course, showed us the fruit, which was almost the size of my hand. We also learned that cacao itself is not the “villain” of the story: what really harms us is the amount of sugar added to chocolate. That's why the best option will always be dark chocolate, which is purer and healthier. We were even told that eating one square of chocolate a day can improve your energy and mood, because cacao helps release serotonin, the substance that makes us happy✨

La primera parada fue Chocolatico, un sitio donde el olor a cacao te envuelve apenas entras🥰 Allí nos contaron cómo se cultiva el cacao en zonas cercanas y, por supuesto, nos mostraron la fruta, que era casi del tamaño de mi mano. También aprendimos que el cacao en sí no es el "villano" de la historia: lo que realmente nos hace daño es la cantidad de azúcar que se le agrega al chocolate. Por eso, la mejor opción siempre será el chocolate amargo, más puro y saludable. Incluso nos dijeron que comer un cuadrito de chocolate al día puede mejorar tu energía y estado de ánimo, porque el cacao ayuda a liberar serotonina, esa sustancia que nos pone felices✨

Fábrica de Vinos🍷 The second stop was at a wine and liquor factory, where we were welcomed with a tasting of four different flavors. Among them, we tried the classic blackberry wine, which was fruity and light. We also tasted a blackberry liqueur (my favorite), another made from passion fruit, and a third made from cape gooseberry, which had a much more intense and sweet flavor. That's when I understood the difference: while wine is made from fermented fruit, liqueur is made from a distillate to which fruit and sugar are added to make it stronger (the alcohol content increases).

La segunda parada fue en una fábrica de vinos y licores, donde nos recibieron con una degustación de cuatro sabores distintos🍷 Entre ellos probamos el clásico vino de mora, frutal y ligero. También degustamos un licor de mora (mi favorito), otro de parchita y un tercero de uchuva, estos tenían un sabor mucho más intenso y azucarado. Ahí entendí la diferencia: mientras el vino nace de la fermentación de la fruta, el licor lleva un destilado al que se le agrega la fruta y el azúcar para hacerlo más fuerte (el grado de alcohol aumenta😬).

Mi Kabrita🐐 Our third stop was at Mi Kabrita, a charming place where they produce goat milk cheese and sweets. The best part was that, for just $1, you could bottle-feed the baby goats!🥹 They were so used to it that as soon as they saw you approaching, they started wagging their tails like excited puppies💜 They were chubby, shiny, and happy... clearly overfed by all the visitors, but so cute that it was impossible not to want to pet them. In addition to the heartwarming experience, the cheeses and sweets had a delicious and unique flavor, a treat that was well worth trying!😇

Nuestra tercera parada fue en Mi Kabrita, un lugar adorable donde producen quesos y dulces a base de leche de cabra. ¡Lo más lindo es que, por solo 1$, podías darle biberón a las cabritas bebés!🥹 Ellas estaban tan acostumbradas a la dinámica que apenas te veían acercarte, empezaban a mover la colita como perritos emocionados💜 Estaban gorditas, brillantes y felices… claramente sobrealimentadas por todos los visitantes, pero tan bonitas que era imposible no querer darles cariño. Además de la experiencia tierna, los quesos y dulces tenían un sabor delicioso y distinto, ¡una delicia que valió la pena probar!😇

La Casita del Árbol🌳 As its name suggests, it's literally a house built in a huge tree, like we often see in movies (although this one is much bigger, of course). To get there, you first have to cross a suspension bridge that makes you feel a little dizzy, but believe me: the experience is totally worth it✨ The little house has two levels, and the view from the top is beautiful. Tree houses aren't common here, so this is probably the first one I've ever seen in person. However, we did have to pay an entrance fee at this stop: $2 per person. Right next door, on solid ground, there's a small place to eat and drink, and we couldn't leave without trying some cold beers, which are very important in German culture🍻

Tal como su nombre lo indica, es literalmente una casa construida en un árbol enorme, como solemos ver en las películas (aunque esta es mucho más grande, claro). Para llegar, primero hay que cruzar un puente colgante que da un poquito de vértigo, pero créeme: la experiencia lo vale totalmente✨ La casita tiene dos niveles, y desde arriba la vista es preciosa. Aquí no es común tener casitas en los árboles, así que probablemente sea la primera que he visto en persona. Eso sí, en esta parada sí tuvimos que pagar entrada: 2$ por persona. Justo al lado, ya en piso firme, hay un pequeño lugar para comer y beber, y no podíamos irnos sin probar unas cervezas frías, algo muy importante en la cultura alemana🍻

Practical Tips💫

My odyssey on public transport was quite an adventure: the most comfortable way to get there is by private car or with a tour, but if you enjoy walking and experiencing the journey, here's how I did it: we took a bus to Plaza Venezuela, then another to La Yaguara, then to El Junquito, and finally a direct bus to La Colonia Tovar (the latter costs $2). That's four buses in total!🚍😬 So it's not impossible to go on your own, but my recommendation is to start early to make the most of the day, because the last bus back from the Colonia to El Junquito leaves at 5:30 pm. Weekends are the best time to visit, as there are more shops open and tourist activities. Of course, if you want to extend the experience, there are inns and hotels where you can spend the night and enjoy the cool weather at your leisure. 🔹 Golden tip: bring a coat. It's not freezing cold, but it is colder than what we're used to in the city, and believe me, you'll enjoy it much more when you're prepared. And you must visit the main square, go inside the church, and delight in the architecture of the houses, the culture, and the atmosphere. Finally, don't leave without trying strawberries and cream, hot chocolate, and, of course, a good local beer or wine. They're part of the experience! 🍓🍫🍷🍺

Consejos Prácticos💫

Mi odisea en transporte público fue toda una aventura: lo más cómodo es ir en carro particular o con un tour, pero si disfrutas pasear y vivir el recorrido, aquí te cuento cómo lo hice: tomamos un bus hasta Plaza Venezuela, de allí otro hasta La Yaguara, luego hasta El Junquito y, finalmente, uno directo a La Colonia Tovar (este último cuesta 2$). ¡En total fueron cuatro buses!🚍😬 Así que no es imposible ir por tu cuenta, pero mi recomendación es que comiences temprano para aprovechar bien el día, porque el último autobús de regreso desde la Colonia hacia El Junquito sale a las 5:30 pm. Los fines de semana son la mejor opción para visitar, ya que hay más tiendas abiertas y actividades turísticas. Eso sí, si quieres alargar la experiencia, hay posadas y hoteles para pasar la noche y disfrutar con calma del clima fresco. 🔹 Tip de oro: lleva abrigo. No es un frío de páramo, pero sí más fuerte que al que estamos acostumbrados en la ciudad, y créeme, se disfruta mucho más cuando vas preparado. Y debes visitar la plaza principal, entrar a la Iglesia y deleitarte con la estructura de las casas, la cultura, y el ambiente. Y por último, no te vayas sin probar las fresas con crema, un chocolate caliente y, claro, una buena cerveza o vino de la zona. ¡Son parte de la experiencia! 🍓🍫🍷🍺
