"Do all uptight city people have to go to a town and fall in love with a carpenter to have a happy ending?". That's what this protagonist thought, and I thought it too as I began this book. I had just come from reading a dense plot like A Discovery of Witches, and was in dire need of something lighter to balance it out. I already knew Emily Henry from Beach Read, and I knew Book Lovers had good reviews, so I decided to give it a try. Spoiler: I devoured it in two days; with coffee in hand or tucked up in bed, I immersed myself in this story that plays with several clichés, but knows how to develop them so well that they made me sigh. It wasn't a life-changing book, but it was one that brightened my life just a little bit, and that's worth gold✨ It gave me what I needed: mental escape, hope, laughter, temporary literary boyfriend, summer travel, and adorable clichés.

"¿Acaso todas las personas estiradas de ciudad tienen que irse a un pueblo y enamorar de un carpintero para tener un final feliz?". Eso lo pensó esta protagonista, y también lo pensé mientras comenzaba este libro. Venía de leer una trama densa como El Descubrimiento de las Brujas, y necesitaba urgentemente algo más ligero para equilibrar. Ya conocía a Emily Henry por Beach Read, y sabía que Book Lovers tenía buenas críticas, así que decidí darle una oportunidad. Spoiler: lo devoré en dos días; con cafecito en mano o bien arropadita en la cama, me sumergí en esta historia que juega con varios clichés, pero sabe desarrollarlos tan bien que me hicieron suspirar. No fue un libro que me cambiara la vida, pero sí uno que me la iluminó un poquito, y eso también vale oro✨ Me dio lo que necesitaba: escape mental, esperanzas, risas, novio literario temporal, viaje veraniego, y clichés adorables.

Small-town romance stories have a formula we already know by heart: an apathetic, unhappy and work-obsessed main character, who travels from the big city to a rural area for some business mission: closing a bookstore or restaurant, checking a piece of land, rescuing a business, etc.... But, obviously, there he/she meets a local person, who makes it question his/her existence, and -as if we didn't see it coming- he/she suddenly discovers the "true meaning of life". Everyone is happy. Except for that ex he/she left in town. Which is usually someone like Nora Stephens. Yes, that character pulled from the back of a New York office. Stiff, practical, controlling, with expensive clothes and impossible shoes to wear on natural terrain. The stumbling block of conventional romance stories. But what if that secondary figure becomes the protagonist? What if she's the one who goes to town, but not to find love, but to reconnect with her sister? What if, instead of going with a cowboy, she meets another equally snarky, workaholic city villain?

Las historias de romance de pueblo tienen una fórmula que ya nos sabemos de memoria: un personaje principal apático, infeliz y obsesionado con su trabajo, que viaja desde la gran ciudad hasta una zona rural por alguna misión empresarial: cerrar una librería o restaurante, revisar un terreno, rescatar un negocio, etc... Pero, obviamente, allí conoce a una persona del pueblo, que le hace cuestionarse su existencia, y -como si no lo viéramos venir- de repente descubre el "verdadero sentido de la vida". Todos felices. Excepto ese ex que dejó en la ciudad. Que por lo general es alguien como Nora Stephens. Sí, ese personaje sacado del fondo de una oficina de Nueva York. Rígidos, prácticos, controladores, con ropa cara y zapatos imposibles de usar en un terreno natural. El obstáculo de la historias románticas convencionales. ¿Pero qué pasa si esa figura secundaria se convierte en la protagonista? ¿Y si es ella quien va al pueblo, pero no para encontrar el amor, sino para reconectar con su hermana? ¿Y si, en lugar de irse con un vaquero, se encuentra con otro villano de ciudad, igual de sarcástico y adicto al trabajo?

🩷What made me stay

One of the main reasons I couldn't put the book down until I finished it was the emotional core of the story: the relationship between sisters🌻 Nora travels to this small town, Sunshine Falls, in the mountains of North Carolina (a fictional place, inspired by the towns near the city of Asheville). This location served as inspiration for a book that Nora was the literary agent for, and one of her younger sister Libby's favorites. Libby is a lovely woman who is pregnant with her third baby and needs a break. And what better way to do that than to travel with her favorite person to a picturesque little town for a month?⛰️ I also have a younger sister with whom I share a strong bond, and I saw myself reflected in Nora, in every gesture she made to make her little sister happy, even if that sometimes meant putting herself second. And, honestly, I felt that their interaction was the most important thing. Thanks to that, everything else emerged. That bond was like reading a love letter to sisters, especially older sisters, who want to see themselves as “the strong ones,” but who also need care and tenderness.

🩷Lo que me hizo quedarme☀️

Uno de los principales puntos que me hizo no soltar el libro hasta terminarlo, fue el núcleo emocional de la historia: la relación entre hermanas🌻 Nora viaja a este pueblito, Sunshine Falls, en las montañas de Carolina del Norte (un lugar ficticio, inspirado en los pueblos cerca de la ciudad de Asheville). Esta ubicación sirvió de inspiración para un libro del cual Nora fue agente literaria, y uno de los favoritos de su hermana menor, Libby. Una mujer adorable, que está embarazada de su tercer bebé, y necesita un descanso. ¿Y qué mejor que viajar con su persona favorita a un pueblito pintoresco durante un mes?⛰️ Yo también tengo una hermana menor, con quién comparto un gran vínculo, y me ví reflejada en Nora, con cada uno de sus gestos para hacer feliz a su hermanita, aunque a veces eso signifique colocarse como segunda prioridad. Y, sinceramente, sentí que esa interacción entre ellas era lo principal. Gracias a eso fue que surgió todo lo demás. Ese vínculo fue como leer una carta de amor a las hermanas, especialmente a las mayores, que quieren verse como "las fuertes", pero que también necesitan cuidado y ternura.

Another plus point is Emily Henry's narrative style📚, which I loved as a romantic comedy. Some writers go overboard with the drama, others get lost in the humor, but Henry finds the perfect balance to make you laugh, sigh, and cry without anything feeling forced. There are dialogues I underlined because I loved them, situations that made me laugh out loud (yes, in public, yes, everyone looked at me), and moments that tugged at my heartstrings right where it hurt the most. It's a good romance story because the characters feel like real people. And talking about romance... uufffsss, just what I was looking for ❤️ There's a part where they mention something like love should be like a deep breath after putting the book down when you finish it. And yes, I agree. This romance has a kind of chemistry that doesn't need to be shouted about to be powerful. I agree with the idea that it should feel safe and stable, with the opportunity to be yourself without fear or pretense; but it should also be fire, spark, shared laughter, and looks that say it all without words🔥 They are not characters who are opposites and magically understand each other. No. The romantic vision of this book is that the most compatible person will be the one who shares your interests, lifestyle, and worldview. A bond developed under the same values and priorities. I found it very realistic and mature, and even comforting. It is not a fairy tale with a happy ending; it is a romance that feels possible, even though it makes you dream.

Otro punto a favor está en el estilo narrativo de Emily Henry📚, que a mí me encantó como comedia romántica. Hay escritores que se pasan con el drama, otras que se pierden en el humor, pero Henry encuentra el punto exacto para hacerte reír, suspirar y llorar sin que nada se sienta forzado. Hay diálogos que subrayé porque me encantaron, situacione que me hicieron reír en voz alta (sí, en público, sí, todos me miraron), y momentos que me apretaron el corazón justo donde más dolía. Es una buena narración del romance, porque se sienten como personas reales. Y hablando del romance... uufffsss, justo lo que estaba buscando ❤️ Hay una parte en que mencionan algo parecido a que el amor debe ser como una inspiración profunda tras dejar el libro a un lado cuando lo terminas. Y sí, estoy de acuerdo. Este romance tiene un tipo de química que no se necesita gritar para ser poderoso. Concuerdo con la idea de que debe sentirse seguro y estable, con oportunidad de ser tú mismo sin miedo ni pretender; peeeero, también debe ser fuego, chispa, risas compartidas y miradas que lo dicen todo sin palabras🔥 No son personajes que sean opuestos y mágicamente se entienden. No. La visión romántica de este libro es que la persona más compatible será aquella que comparta tus intereses, estilo de vida y perspectivas del mundo. Un vínculo desarrollado bajo los mismos valores y prioridades. A mí me pareció algo muy realista y maduro, e incluso reconfortante. No es un cuento de hadas con final rosa, es un romance que se siente posible, incluso aunque te hace soñar.

Nora Stephens💄 Nora is the kind of woman that society often insists on misinterpreting. At 32, she has a solid career, a ten-step skincare routine, and a taste for things that make her feel good (including a room just for shoes, for example). Does that make her superficial? I don't think so. What happened is that Nora decided to build a life with structure and control, precisely because she comes from a childhood with many deprivations, especially financial ones. And her greatest fear is that she and her sister will once again lack money to eat. The story begins with Nora breaking up with a guy she had been dating for a few months (the reason? Y no por necesidad, sino porque también merece ser amada. Lo que realmente necesitaba Nora es que dejaran de juzgarla, y comenzaran a entenderla. Y allí entra: Charlie Lastra📚 El arquetipo del gato negro: elegante, misterioso, con un sarcasmo filoso y una mirada que lo dice todo, incluso cuando no dice nada. Ella es agente literaria, él es editor literario. Nora tiene los zapatos perfectos para cada outfit, charlie no permitiría ni una pelusa en su suéter caro. ¿Almas gemelas?. Book Lovers isn't a book that changed my life or made it into my top five favorite books, but it was just what I needed at the time I read it. Personas que, aunque tomen rutas distintas, siempre encuentran el camino de vuelta. Y por eso, yo también los elegiría. Book Lovers no es un libro que me haya cambiado la vida ni que se cuele en mi top cinco de libros favoritos, pero sí fue justo lo que necesitaba en el momento en que lo leí. Ligero pero con sustancia, tierno sin ser empalagoso, divertido sin forzar la risa☀️ Si estos personajes fueran un café, serían de esos bien fuertes que te despiertan por completo, pero que al final del trago te dejan el corazón tibiecito. “Y, entonces, apareciste tú. –le refulgen los ojos como dos linternas repasando la oscuridad, buscando-.
