The first season of The Buccaneers wasn't exactly a hit on my list of favorites, but it wasn't lousy either. It had its twists and turns, its touch of drama and, above all, enough spark to leave me curious about what would come next. And of course, when the second season arrived I thought: "ok, this is where the story can take off"... but what I found was something very different. For me it didn't take off, it sank. Because yes, although the actors did a decent job, their characters came close to being unbearable (and some of them did it effortlessly). And it's a shame, because it was a story that promised quite a bit, but in the end it got caught up in its own drama without knowing where to move forward.

La primera temporada de Las Bucaneras no fue precisamente un hit en mi lista de favoritas, pero tampoco estuvo pésima. Tenía sus enredos, su toque de drama y, sobre todo, la suficiente chispa como para dejarme con la curiosidad de saber qué vendría después. Y claro, cuando llegó la segunda temporada pensé: “ok, aquí es donde la historia puede despegar”… pero lo que encontré fue otra cosa muy distinta. Para mí no despegó, se hundió. Porque sí, aunque los actores hicieron un trabajo decente, sus personajes llegaron a rozar lo insoportable (y algunos lo lograron sin esfuerzo). Y es una lástima, porque era una historia que prometía bastante, pero al final se quedó atrapada en su propio drama sin saber hacia dónde avanzar.

Plot and narrative rhythm

The second season of The Buccaneers is not that it has become more complex or slower; the problem is that it leaned towards an exaggerated drama that borders on the implausible. The characters move between hypocritical attitudes and decisions that are difficult to empathize with, which detracts from the strength of the story. Added to this is an irregular narrative rhythm, with situations that occur too quickly or without explanation, and with several inconsistencies that do not even correspond to the "creative license" of a period series, but to the lack of historical coherence. The love triangle between Nan, Theo and Guy, which in the first season could pass as a bearable cliché, here becomes a heavy and repetitive burden that drags a good part of the chapters. Instead of necessary or well-worked conflicts, what we find are unnecessary twists that bring more annoyance than excitement. The story doesn't feel stagnant or padded, it simply moves awkwardly towards a denouement that does little to justify everything that has dragged up to that point.

Trama y ritmo narrativo

La segunda temporada de Las Bucaneras no es que se haya vuelto más compleja ni más lenta; el problema es que se inclinó hacia un dramatismo exagerado que roza lo inverosímil. Los personajes se mueven entre actitudes hipócritas y decisiones que resultan difíciles de empatizar, lo que le resta fuerza a la historia. A esto se suma un ritmo narrativo irregular, con situaciones que ocurren demasiado rápido o sin explicación, y con varias inconsistencias que ni siquiera corresponden al “licencia creativa” de una serie de época, sino a la falta de coherencia histórica. El triángulo amoroso entre Nan, Theo y Guy, que en la primera temporada podía pasar como un cliché soportable, aquí se vuelve una carga pesada y repetitiva que arrastra buena parte de los capítulos. En vez de conflictos necesarios o bien trabajados, lo que encontramos son giros innecesarios que aportan más molestia que emoción. La historia no se siente estancada ni rellena, simplemente avanza de manera torpe hacia un desenlace que poco logra justificar todo lo que se arrastró hasta ese punto.

Character Development

Nan St. George: If in the first season Nan was no longer entirely sympathetic, in this second season she ended up becoming an exhausting character. And not because she was complex, but because her contradictions do not feel like a well-crafted human trait, but like a capricious back-and-forth that hurts everyone around her. She is impulsive, selfish and immature: one day she wants to save her marriage to Theo, and the next she is already planning to run away with Guy. Her changes are so rapid and drastic that it's hard to keep track of her, and worse, it's hard to justify her decisions. Most frustratingly, despite having married to protect her sister and nephew, Nan spends much of the season complaining rather than coming to terms with the cards she chose to play. Theo is not a bad husband; on the contrary, he strikes me as a very good man. Yes, their marriage was a ""sacrifice"" (note the double quotation marks), but it wasn't the end of the world either. However, Nan insists on acting as if everything is against her, refusing to acknowledge that some of the chaos she faces comes directly from her own actions.

Desarrollo de Personajes

Nan St. George: Si en la primera temporada Nan ya no era del todo simpática, en esta segunda terminó de convertirse en un personaje agotador. Y no porque fuese compleja, sino porque sus contradicciones no se sienten como un rasgo humano bien trabajado, sino como un vaivén caprichoso que lastima a todos los que la rodean. Es impulsiva, egoísta e inmadura: un día quiere salvar su matrimonio con Theo, y al siguiente ya planea escapar con Guy. Sus cambios son tan rápidos y drásticos que cuesta seguirle el hilo, y peor aún, cuesta justificar sus decisiones. Lo más frustrante es que, a pesar de haberse casado para proteger a su hermana y a su sobrino, Nan pasa gran parte de la temporada quejándose en lugar de asumir las cartas que eligió jugar. Theo no es un mal esposo, al contrario, me parece un muy buen hombre. Sí, su matrimonio fue un ""sacrificio"" (nótese las doble comillas), pero tampoco era el fin del mundo. Sin embargo, Nan insiste en actuar como si todo estuviera en su contra, negándose a reconocer que parte del caos que enfrenta viene directamente de sus propios actos.

And here comes the most annoying part: her hypocrisy. She blames Lizzy and Theo for ""betraying"" her, when in fact it was she who broke the trust from the beginning. She slept with her fiancé's best friend the night before the wedding, tried to run off with him, and even married kept looking for him. This constant double standard turns her into a self-made victim, with an attitude that ends up being so unbearable that it borders on the ironic: everything she tried to avoid in order to protect her sister, ends up happening precisely because of her selfish actions. The problem is that there is never a moment to empathize with Nan. There is no redemption, no growth, not even a hint of self-criticism. If in the first season she was just an immature and indecisive girl who wanted everyone to like her, in this second season, having more power, she only became more arrogant and haughty. Instead of evolving, she became a character that scares the viewer away, and whose presence is so heavy that it makes you want to leave the series.... But, as I like gossip, obviously I had to end it. It is important to clarify that this is an opinion of Nan St. George's character, and it is necessary to know how to separate the character from her actress. The actress is not to blame for having been given a bad script.

Y aquí llega lo más molesto: su hipocresía. Culpa a Lizzy y a Theo de ""traicionarla"", cuando en realidad fue ella quien rompió la confianza desde el principio. Se acostó con el mejor amigo de su prometido la noche antes de la boda, intentó huir con él, y aún casada siguió buscándolo. Esa constante doble moral la convierte en una víctima fabricada por sí misma, con una actitud que termina siendo tan insoportable que roza lo irónico: todo lo que trataba de evitar para proteger a su hermana, termina ocurriendo precisamente por sus acciones egoístas. El problema es que nunca hay un momento para empatizar con Nan. No hay redención, ni crecimiento, ni siquiera un atisbo de autocrítica. Si en la primera temporada era solo una chica inmadura e indecisa que quería agradar a todos, en esta segunda, al tener más poder, solo se volvió más arrogante y soberbia. En vez de evolucionar, se convirtió en un personaje que ahuyenta al espectador, y cuya presencia es tan pesada que te hace querer abandonar la serie... Pero, como me gusta el chisme, obviamente tenía que terminarla. Importante aclarar que es una opinión del personaje de Nan St. George, y hay que saber separar el personaje de sus actriz. La actriz no tiene la culpa de que le hayan dado un mal guión.

Theodore, Duke of Tintagel Theo is, ironically, my "least crumbly" friend. All it took was for an attractive woman to pay attention to him, for him to be half in love. And yet, I never disliked him. Rather, I saw him as someone who had grown up in a gilded cage called a duchy and all he longed for was to be free, to fly on his own. Nan represented that promise of freedom, but the sad thing is that in the end she did just what he feared most: marry him not out of sincere love, but for his title and power. That betrayal of his wishes seemed cruel to me, and not because Nan was "the villain," but because no one deserves a marriage founded on a lie of that caliber. In this season I appreciated him more because he showed himself aware of what he wanted, he allowed himself to follow his heart and looked for paths outside the established, even if they were socially frowned upon. He tried with Nan, but I wouldn't stand living with her either😬 What hurt me is that Theo was a puppet inside the story: his mother, his wife and even his best friend pulled the strings at their convenience, without giving him the place he deserved. Still, I agreed with the final decision he made, and although I don't know if there will be a third season, the only thing I hope is that the narrative justice he was denied so far will come in the form of genuine happiness.

Theodore, Duque de Tintagel Theo es, irónicamente, mi amigo “el menos migajero”. Bastaba con que una mujer atractiva le prestara atención para que él ya estuviera medio enamorado. Y aun así, nunca me cayó mal. Más bien lo vi como alguien que había crecido en una jaula dorada llamada ducado y lo único que anhelaba era ser libre, volar por su cuenta. Nan representaba esa promesa de libertad, pero lo triste es que al final ella hizo justo lo que él más temía: casarse con él no por amor sincero, sino por su título y poder. Esa traición a sus deseos me pareció cruel, y no porque Nan fuera “la villana”, sino porque nadie merece un matrimonio cimentado en una mentira de ese calibre. En esta temporada lo valoré más porque se mostró consciente de lo que quería, se permitió seguir su corazón y buscó caminos fuera de lo establecido, aunque fueran mal vistos socialmente. Lo intentó con Nan, pero yo tampoco soportaría vivir con ella😬 Lo que me dolió es que Theo fue una marioneta dentro de la historia: su madre, su esposa y hasta su mejor amigo movieron los hilos a su conveniencia, sin darle el lugar que merecía. Aun así, estuve de acuerdo con la decisión final que tomó, y aunque no sé si habrá tercera temporada, lo único que espero es que la justicia narrativa que le negaron hasta ahora llegue en forma de felicidad genuina.

Lizzy Elmsworth Lizzy and Mabel have been my favorites since the first season, and in this second season Lizzy shined again (partially). What I like most about her is that she's not a flamboyant character, but a genuine one: assertive, resilient, and with the ability to be kind while still speaking her mind. Many criticize her for the affair with Theo, but I feel that Lizzy was indeed loyal to Nan. She was engaged to someone else, hid Guy's letters so as not to interfere with her friend's marriage, and supported Nan when she decided to go with Guy, even knowing how controversial it was. In the end, Nan always made it clear that she didn't love Theo and that their marriage was a sacrifice,, that she was unhappy, so when both -Theo and Lizzy- thought Nan would never come back, what happened was more human than malicious. Yes, Lizzy disrespected her fiancé, but that mistake also made her more complex, more real. Plus, that unexpected romance gave us one of the best scenes of the series: Theo's speech to Lizzy before their wedding, where he asks her not to settle for the bare minimum, not to choose him or Hector, but to choose herself. Beautiful✨ For me, Lizzy embodies a more mature and realistic view of love and life at that time, and that's precisely why it generated so much empathy for me.

Lizzy Elmsworth Lizzy y Mabel han sido mis favoritas desde la primera temporada, y en esta segunda Lizzy volvió a brillar (aunque parcialmente). Lo que más me gusta de ella es que no es un personaje extravagante, sino genuino: firme, resiliente y con la capacidad de ser amable sin dejar de decir lo que piensa. Muchos la critican por el affaire con Theo, pero yo siento que Lizzy sí fue leal a Nan. Ella estaba comprometida con otro, ocultó las cartas de Guy para no interferir en el matrimonio de su amiga y apoyó a Nan cuando decidió irse con Guy, aun sabiendo lo polémico que era. Al final, Nan siempre dejó claro que no amaba a Theo y que su matrimonio era un sacrificio, que era infeliz, así que cuando ambos —Theo y Lizzy— pensaron que Nan no volvería jamás, lo que sucedió fue más humano que malicioso. Sí, Lizzy le faltó el respeto a su prometido, pero ese error también la volvió más compleja, más real. Además, ese romance inesperado nos regaló una de las mejores escenas de la serie: el discurso de Theo a Lizzy antes de su boda, donde le pide que no se conforme con lo mínimo, que no lo elija ni a él ni a Héctor, sino que se escoja a sí misma. Hermoso✨ Para mí, Lizzy encarna una visión más madura y realista del amor y la vida en aquella época, y justamente por eso me generó tanta empatía.

Is there anything I liked?

One of the successes of the series is, without a doubt, its visual section: the costumes and scenery are beautiful, colorful and well elaborated. It is a delight to look at, although I must admit that sometimes that eagerness for aesthetics won out over historical accuracy, and that took me a little out of the experience. The same thing happened with the soundtrack: although it accompanied the important moments, on several occasions it felt anticlimactic, as if it didn't quite fit with what was happening. On the other hand, the subplots were a pleasant surprise. In this season they felt more genuine, better constructed and with an emotional touch that really hit home. There was even one scene in particular that broke me and made me cry, because not only was it well written, but it conveyed pain and truth. Those kinds of moments are what elevate the story and make watching it not completely a waste of time.

¿Hay algo que me gustó?

Uno de los aciertos de la serie es, sin duda, su apartado visual: los vestuarios y la escenografía son preciosos, coloridos y bien elaborados. Es un deleite a la vista, aunque debo admitir que a veces ese afán por la estética le ganó a la fidelidad histórica, y eso me sacó un poco de la experiencia. Lo mismo pasó con el soundtrack: si bien acompañaba los momentos importantes, en varias ocasiones se sintió anticlimático, como si no terminara de encajar con lo que estaba pasando. Por otro lado, las subtramas fueron una grata sorpresa. En esta temporada se sintieron más genuinas, mejor construidas y con un toque emocional que realmente llegó. Incluso hubo una escena en particular que me quebró y me hizo llorar, porque no solo estaba bien escrita, sino que transmitía dolor y verdad. Ese tipo de momentos son los que elevan la historia y hacen que verla no sea completamente una pérdida de tiempo.

In conclusion, this season was like that expensive dress you see in the window: beautiful, full of details, but when you try it on, you discover that it doesn't fit quite right. It has some beautiful things - the costumes, the set design, some subplots that really touched the heart - but it also stumbles in what matters most: coherence, historical fidelity and narrative rhythm. Still, I'm left with the moments that shone, those that managed to humanize the characters and shake me with emotion. In the end, what this series reminded me is that not everything that looks perfect is perfect... and that sometimes the imperfect, the genuine and the painful is what ends up connecting the most✨

En conclusión, esta temporada fue como ese vestido carísimo que ves en la vitrina: hermoso, lleno de detalles, pero cuando te lo pruebas, descubres que no ajusta del todo bien. Tiene cosas preciosas —los vestuarios, la escenografía, algunas subtramas que realmente llegaron al corazón— pero también tropieza en lo que más importa: la coherencia, la fidelidad histórica y el ritmo narrativo. Aun así, me quedo con los momentos que brillaron, esos que lograron humanizar a los personajes y sacudirme con emoción. Al final, lo que esta serie me recordó es que no todo lo que luce perfecto lo es… y que a veces lo imperfecto, lo genuino y lo doloroso es lo que más termina conectando✨
