In Cairo I decided to get up early in the morning to visit the well-known citadel which is located more outside the center and to get there, a trip to the east of the city must be made. The citadel was already built hundreds of years ago during 12th century and the goal was to build a stable fortress that would withstand attacks by the crusaders and because of the location on the Muqattam mountain it was perfect to have the whole environment in one view. It was inhabited over the centuries by different rulers of the country and it came again and again to the fact that things have been rebuilt to adapt the protection more and it was already considered as the most powerful military institution in the country which was to guarantee the protection of the government. For some centuries it was even the most important center of Egypt from a political point of view and was also considered from a symbolic point of view as a sign of strength and power, but it should later lose importance in the military context and be used more for administrative purposes.

Sultan Saladin is considered the builder and in total it was about 10 years that were invested in the construction and even when it comes to the materials very intelligent work was done and partly materials were used which were the remains of old buildings and it is assumed that the other materials also came from the region. Within the site there are also some historic buildings such as the well-known Mohammed Ali Mosque, which is also known as one of the most famous buildings in the city and was built like the model of the Ottomans. There are also other religious buildings on the site which are much smaller and a strong city wall should protect all the buildings from enemies and once this was even connected to the walls of Cairo. Today, a wide variety of buildings can be seen on the site and in addition to the mosques which can be visited, there are also museums that revolve around the history of the police and military. To this day it's one of the buildings that are best preserved and in the whole Arab world people worship the citadel which is why it is no wonder that many people come here which I can only recommend to anyone who should be in the city and want to experience the culture.
