With Water Up to My Neck Sometimes it is difficult for me to write a few lines dedicated to the wonderful world of sports, especially when it comes to the defeats of any Cuban team outside our region. The truth is that it takes away your desire to write, and uncertainties start to navigate in your mind. Unexpectedly, ideas begin to flood your brain, and you think about how wonderful it is to leave your impressions for others to be filled with your experiences. Sadly, once again, the Cuban team in the Under-18 category has fallen in the World Baseball Championship held in Japan. Our players only connected 2 hits, one of which was a double from cleanup hitter José Zambrano. It seems that the defeat against Japan froze their bats, as they have gone 15 consecutive innings without crossing home plate to score a run. On a positive note, the performance of the young pitcher from my hometown, Pinar del Río, Marlon García, was impressive. He still looks like a child and, despite the loss, he only allowed 2 hits and the decisive run from the Puerto Ricans. Our pitcher also struck out 5 batters and pitched the entire game for Cuba. Unfortunately, he was not supported offensively by a batting lineup that seems to have frozen in time. After two games where they scored a total of 18 runs, their production has come to a halt. With this result, the hopes of qualifying have become complicated, as Puerto Rico was a more manageable opponent, so to speak, than South Korea, our players' final rival. I believe these young men need to believe in themselves and must go out there to dominate the field in search of that longed-for victory that will allow them to fight for a spot in the super round. Honestly, it seems very difficult for our team to qualify. In fact, the match against the Asians, which ended with a Japanese victory, was very close. Nothing is impossible, nor is anything written in baseball; I believe that Cubans have always shown their champion spirit in any international event despite difficulties. I fully trust that they will be able to qualify and secure that spot. It is also logical that our offense must awaken from its slumber because otherwise we will continue to drown in the sea with the rope around our necks.
