Life Without Light - My Lagos Experience

Living in Lagos mainland can be tough sometimes, especially when it comes to electricity supply. I always say this thing, if you are staying in Lagos and you don’t have alternative like generator or solar, you will suffer because the power situation is nothing to write home about.

For me, light is something I need everyday. I am a lady and most of my daily activities depend on it. I use electric cooker at home because it is faster, not like I hate stove or gas, but electric makes things quicker when I’m tired after work. Without light, I have to start looking for another option or delay eating. Another thing is that I work in an insurance company, so appearance matters a lot. I need to look neat, my clothes ironed and all, but imagine waking up and there is no light for one week straight. Sometimes it can even be close to two weeks. That’s the dilemma of Lagos mainland life.

The crazy part is that after all this, they will still bring bill at the end of the month like we have been using 24/7 light. And trust me, those bills are not small at all. I keep wondering if they charge based on assumption because it doesn’t add up. How can you stay almost two weeks without light and still pay heavy?

In the street I used to live before, they once stole part of our transformer. That day" I remember everybody just wake up and start shouting because we didn’t know when they removed it. It was like a movie. We stayed for almost two months without electricity because they said we should contribute money to fix it. Some people were ready to pay, others were not, so the argument was plenty. Some people even relocated because of the stress.

Now in my current street, we don’t really face theft issues but the light is still very unstable. At least it is better than before, but it’s nothing like steady. I can say we get like 2 days of good supply then next thing, blackout for days. And when you ask them why, the answer is always technical fault. There is always one problem after another.

I just wonder when we will get to that point where electricity will be steady in Nigeria. Because honestly, we shout up NEPA like it’s a national celebration anytime they bring light.
