Do you know that Life has a way of surprising us. People you think you know so well can suddenly become strangers once their life takes a better turn. I’ve seen it happen again and again, and honestly, it still shocks me every time.
There’s one example that always comes to my mind. A man that used to sit outside with us in the evenings, just like any regular person. We would gist, laugh, even complain about how things were hard. But immediately he got appointed into a political office, everything about him changed. He stopped coming around, he started moving with bodyguards, and the same people he once drank with on the roadside couldn’t even get close to him again. Some said maybe he was protecting himself, but to me it looked like he just felt too big for those old circles.
It made me realize that success really brings out the hidden part of people. Some use their success to lift others, while some allow it to separate them from the same people who once stood by them. It’s painful because you expect that when things get better, they will remember where they came from. But most times, it doesn’t happen that way.
Speaking from my side as a lady, I’ve also noticed these changes in smaller situations. For example, when a woman gets married or starts earning better, the way people around her relate with her changes, and sometimes she also starts withdrawing from her old friends. Not always out of pride, but just because life at that point demands more from her. But to outsiders, it will look like she’s acting proud or feeling above them.
I’ve asked myself if I’ve ever changed too, and the truth is yes. Sometimes I get so busy chasing my own goals that I don’t keep in touch with people the way I used to. It’s not intentional, but I know it can hurt the other person. That’s why I try to remind myself not to forget those who were there when I had nothing. Because if we are not careful, success can easily blind us.
A great man once said, nearly all men can stand adversity but if you want to know a mans character give him power
People change when they start succeeding but at the end of the day, money and position doesn’t last forever. What lasts is how people remember you. When life turns again, and it always does, it’s those relationships that will matter.
