It’s Friday, and we are in North Bend, Washington visiting our son and daughter in law. We got up at 3 AM to get ready, pack the car and head out.
It’s a rainy day all up and down the I-5 corridor; some places a deluge and others that light, misty rain this area is famous for.
The drive was mostly uneventful, with some major 20 mile per hour speeds! It seemed that whichever lane we were in wasn’t moving while all the others were, and when I changed lanes once, then that lane slowed to a crawl! It was as if the slowness followed us, lol!
For the moment and probably for the time we are here, there won’t be much in the line of forest hiking. Something much more special is going on.

This little guy is a bit bitmapped, but he was so cute enjoying his pine cone!
Fireweed is a plant likened to the end of summer when it blooms. It is in bloom right now and going to seed. One plant can produce 80,000 seeds similar to dandelion fluff for the wind to carry away. They can remain viable in the soil for quite a number of years!
This is what the blooms look like.
Fireweed is a ‘pioneer species’ meaning it can often be some of the first plants to appear in areas damaged by nature or land after a forest fire has gone through. It helps to establish an ecosystem system. Pretty cool!
If you wish to cultivate it, say for honey, the bees love it! I’ve known people who have specifically purchased honey that the bees were pollinating fireweed because of the flavor of that honey. However fireweed is a rhizome, so it can be aggressive and overgrow other plants.
Medicinal properties include anti inflammatory, used to treat wounds and burns as well as aid in digestive issues. Remember to do your due diligence before consuming any!
