We visited Bolehill Quarry which is a former gritstone quarry that closed at the start of World War I. It supplied stone for nearby dams. Nowadays, the quarry is a favourite place for walking, photography, especially fungi spotting, particularly fly agerics.

On the gate and the old millstone was a little stonechat. We spotted a few darting about.

From here, we walked down into the old quarry. It's quite steep and slippery so it takes its toll on your knees.

At the bottom there is what we call a 'millstone graveyard' which are the remains of the working quarry. They are now covered in moss and lichen.

The quarry is now full of lovely silver birch trees. It is particularly atmospheric when there's a lot of mist. Today, it was slightly overcast but the sun came out and it was like summer again.

There was a lovely contrast of colour with the brown bracken and the blue sky.

I only spotted the odd fly ageric. Sadly, most of them have died off.

You occasionally see the odd cow or sheep down here, and other photographers, but apart from a few hikers, we had the place to ourselves.
