At this time of year, herds of red deer gather on our local moors not too far from me for their yearly rut. We decided to have a trip over to see if we could spot them. Sure enough, it wasn't long before we could see little dots on the landscape. We parked up at the side of the road, walked through the gate and up the track.

The moorland looks particularly good this time of year with the brown bracken and brooding skies.

Even though it was a dull day what we were about to see more than made up for the weather.

Obviously, we didn't want to scare them, so we didn’t get too close to the deer but we could still hear the stags from where we were stood as they were quite vocal. They were bellowing loudly as they competed to mate with the hinds.

We watched them through the binoculars for a while and then left. I hope the hinds choose wisely ...
