En los niños y adolescentes, las enfermedades de la salud mental pueden ser difíciles de detectar, porque tienen síntomas completamente diferentes que en los adultos.
Y si en algo hemos hecho énfasis, es en la detección temprana de la depresión, por ejemplo, aunque existen muchas otras enfermedades o trastornos de los cuales tenemos que estar pendientes en ellos.
Pero es la depresión la que, de pronto, está ocasionando muchos problemas porque pasa desapercibida; y de hecho, los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades, CDC, en sus siglas en inglés, han expresado que entre el año 2022 y 2023, 2.7 millones de niños, solamente en Estados Unidos, han padecido de depresión diagnosticada.
Aquí tres casos que nos pondrán a pensar y, aunque desde el punto de vista médico sean frecuentes, para mucha gente esto puede pasar desapercibido.

Raúl y su obsesión por la patineta
Raúl tiene 11 años y fue cambiado a estudiar a otra escuela, en otro pueblo; él tenía, antes de esto, un comportamiento completamente normal, e inclusive, alegre.
Su madre decía que hablaba de que ya tenía novia, lo cual era incierto, por supuesto, pero mostraba su socialización.
Con el cambio de institución educativa comenzó a volverse retraído y, debido a que la nueva vivienda tenía condiciones de seguridad en sus calles aledañas, *comenzó a practicar la patineta y hacer ejercicios bastante riesgosos*, a pesar de las advertencias de sus padres, las cuales ignoró.
De ser un niño que obedecía, comenzó a tener problemas de disciplina en el hogar.
Y una situación que los padres observaron fue que comenzó a culpar a otros de su bajo rendimiento a pesar de que este no era malo, pero sí había bajado en forma notable.
Se pensó que era el cambio de escuela, sin embargo, en la consulta de orientación y psicopedagogía se logró detectar ***[acoso](https://es.childrens.com/health-wellness/spot-and-stop-bullying)***, y esta obsesión por la patineta fue definida como un comportamiento riesgoso y autodestructivo.
*Si se observa negación para ir al colegio, problemas para dormir, aislamiento, evitación de situaciones sociales, baja autoestima, problemas con la calificación y el comportamiento en la escuela, así que esta sea una nueva escuela, revisa estas señales de alerta.*

María y la vecina que aún no murió
Después del divorcio de sus padres, María presentó aislamiento y mucho miedo, que evidentemente, fue diagnosticado como una **[depresión](https://www.everydayhealth.com/depression-pictures/subtle-signs-your-child-is-depressed.aspx)** leve producto de este acontecimiento.
Pasados dos años, ya adolescente y luego de una aparente conducta proactiva en el instituto donde estudia, comenzó a crear preocupación excesiva por familiares y amigos enfermos.
*No comprendo por qué esto pasó inadvertido para su madre, pero la señal de alerta comenzó a darse cuando mostró tristeza, llanto fácil y preocupación excesiva por la enfermedad de una vecina, llegando a tener pesadillas ante la inminente muerte de la señora que, al final, no murió.*
Este no es un patrón normal, además de que en sus antecedentes mostraba **dolores de cabeza frecuentes**, muchas veces en la institución educativa, que ocasionaba la ida a la enfermería.
Los dolores frecuentes, sin razón aparente, pueden esconder una depresión silenciosa no tratada, que llega a exacerbarse o a expresarse ante un evento de la vida que no esperamos.

Antonio y los amigos pasajeros
*Este adolescente es muy inteligente y físicamente bastante atractivo para las chicas del sexo opuesto, por lo que siempre tenía gente a su alrededor; es decir, que es lo que se puede llamar una persona popular.*
Sus padres comenzaron a observar que las amistades le duraban poco; y en menos de tres meses pasaron tres personas de ser, mejores amigos a perfectos desconocidos por los que, luego, ni siquiera se interesaba en lo más mínimo.
Conjuntamente, mostró explosiones de ira ante situaciones como la pérdida de su equipo favorito, el tipo de comida que se le presentaba, o cuando se le despertaba para ir al colegio.
Y aunque ha mejorado bastante, aún está en consulta médica de control producto de una depresión detectada que puede ser mayor, donde había, sin manifestarse, hasta trastornos del sueño.

Que no pasen desapercibidos los signos de depresión
Los niños menores de 12 años generalmente lloran, se desesperan, muestran niveles de energía evidentemente bajos, se aíslan y explican que quieren irse del hogar, que quieren morir o que se van a lesionar.
Pero existen signos en los adolescentes que son simplemente anónimos y aquí las expresiones de muerte se silencian hacia los pensamientos de muerte muy peligrosos.
Hay comportamientos de alto riesgo, sentimientos de inutilidad y autodesprecio, que, muchas veces, se evidencian en determinados momentos, como una salida social.
***En esta fase el peligro es el consumo de sustancias y el suicidio...***
Hay síntomas psicosomáticos como dolores de cabeza, dolores de estómago, vómitos a la hora de salir fuera del hogar, dolores articulares y hasta fiebre súbita.
Estos, todos, deberían alertarnos sobre una posible depresión.
*Tanto el pediatra como cualquier profesional de la salud mental colegiado, puede ayudarnos a descartar este tipo de patologías que tanto está incidiendo en la salud mental de nuestra juventud.*
No perdamos el tiempo, porque muchas veces nos damos cuenta de que esto está ocurriendo cuando hay señales evidentes de autolesión o cuando los trastornos alimentarios están instalados.

His mother said that he was talking about having a girlfriend, which was uncertain, of course, but it showed his socialization.
With the change of educational institution he began to become withdrawn and, because the new housing had safe conditions in its surrounding streets, *he started practicing skateboarding and doing quite risky exercises*, despite the warnings of his parents, which he ignored.

That the signs of depression do not go unnoticed

But there are signs in teenagers that are simply anonymous, and here the expressions of death are silenced towards very dangerous thoughts of death.
There are high-risk behaviors, feelings of uselessness and self-contempt, which often become evident at certain times, as a social exit.

There are psychosomatic symptoms such as headaches, stomach pains, vomiting when leaving the home, joint pain and even sudden fever.
These, all of them, should alert us to a possible depression.
