WHEN HELP TURNS BITTER

The Johnsons were a simple family. They lived in a 3 bedroom house in a quiet area. Mr. Johnson worked in a bank and his wife owned a small store. Their only child Sarah was 16 years old, she was pretty and smart. They were not rich but they lived well.

One day, Mrs. Johnson went to her hometown and returned with a young girl around Sarah’s age, her name was Tasha. Mrs. Johnson took her in out of kindness because the girl had no parents and there was no one taking care of her aside from her aunt who did not really bother about her.

Mr. Johnson agreed to Tasha staying because his wife had said she would help with their house chores, so the work load won’t be much on her.

They gave Tasha her own room, clothes and food. Even a small phone Sarah wasn’t using anymore. They treated her well.

She was calm and respectful. She swept the house, did the dishes and cleaned without a worry. She always answered with “yes man” or “yes sir”. But things slowly began to change.

Tasha watched Sarah. The way she dressed, the way her father dropped her off, her new bag and shoes. How she had a bigger room, with a mirror and a laptop.

At one point, she began to have different thoughts. Thoughts like, “Why is she living a soft life while I do all the work?” “Why is her hair neat and designed with bows while I use rubber bands?

Tasha tried on Sarah’s clothes when no one was home, she used her perfume and lip gloss, and checked herself out in the mirror. She wanted everything Sarah had.

One day, she wore Sarah’s earrings and forgot to remove them. When Mrs. Johnson asked how she got it, she said she saw it on the floor while cleaning. Mrs. Johnson let her off because of her explanation and thought it was just child behaviour.

Sarah caught her in her room trying on her clothes and yelled at her. Tasha took it personal when Sarah told her parents about it. She started doing things to make Tasha look bad. She hid her shoes, deleted her works from her laptop and drew colors on her clothes.

She took pictures of Sarah’s things and posted them online, claiming them to be hers. Sarah saw them and showed them to her parents. At first, she denied it but then she riled up and started yelling.

“She has everything I want. I do all the work in the house and she just eat and looks pretty. What about me?” Mrs. Johnson saw the undeniable hatred in Tasha’s eyes towards her daughter. This was the same girl they fed, clothed and sheltered.

Mrs. Johnson sent her back to her hometown. When the people there asked why she brought Tasha back, she told them what happened.

“I didn’t treat her as a maid. Gave her food, clothes and a bed, in exchange for the little work she could do. But it wasn’t enough for her. She wanted my daughter’s life.” The people felt sorry for her and told her to help next time with wisdom and not just emotions.
