For years, I had dreamed of visiting the Monumento a la Divina Pastora (Monument to the Divine Shepherdess) in Barquisimeto. I had seen it in photos, heard stories about it, and felt the devotion that surrounds it, but I had never had the opportunity to travel there. Until finally, on an afternoon that promised golden sunsets—because sunsets in Barquisimeto are beautiful—I found myself at the top of Colina del Viento (Wind Hill) in front of that majestic image formed by thousands of aluminum tubes that bring the image of the Virgin to life.
My idea was clear: climb the steps, breathe in the Larense landscape, and watch the sun set behind the city... But nature had other plans. A torrential rain was approaching in the distance, accompanied by a strong wind that warned of its imminent arrival.

While many visitors sought shelter, I stayed there, excited, listening to the metallic sound of the tubes colliding with the wind. Some were frightened by the noise, but for me it was as if the monument was speaking, as if the Divine Shepherdess was welcoming me with an unexpected, powerful, and lively symphony.

This monument, also known as the Manto de María (Mary's Mantle), was inaugurated in 2016 and is considered the largest Marian monument in the world. It is 63 meters high and consists of 3,772 aluminum tubes, designed to create a kinetic image that can be seen from more than 70 kilometers away. The devotion to the Divine Shepherdess came to Venezuela from Seville in the 18th century and has since been a symbol of faith, hope, and protection for thousands of people. Every January 14, millions of devotees participate in one of the largest processions in the world, walking from Santa Rosa to Barquisimeto.

Before the rain came, I explored the monument... It is a spacious place, perfect for walking, breathing, and letting yourself be enveloped by the landscape. I loved the colorful and artistic handicrafts exhibited by local entrepreneurs. I bought some souvenirs for my family, each with that Larense touch that speaks of tradition and affection.

From the top, I could see part of the city, watch the rain approaching from a distance, and feel that, even though there was no sunset, the sky gave me another form of beauty.

The climb to the monument is 296 steps, and each step is an invitation to contemplate. I had been appreciating it from afar, as I approached by road, and standing there in front of its immensity, I understood that I had not only arrived at a place... It was a moment of connection, of emotion, of gratitude.

Desde hace años soñaba con conocer el Monumento a la Divina Pastora en Barquisimeto, lo había visto en fotos, escuchado relatos, sentido la devoción que lo rodea, pero nunca había tenido la oportunidad de viajar hasta allí. Hasta que finalmente, en una tarde que prometía atardeceres dorados porque los atardeceres en Barquisimeto son hermosos🤩 me encontré en la cima de la Colina del Viento frente a esa majestuosa imagen formada por miles de tubos de aluminio que dan vida a la imagen de la Virgen.
Mí idea era clara; subir los escalones, respirar el paisaje larense y contemplar el sol cayendo detrás de la ciudad... Pero la naturaleza tenía otros planes. Una torrencial lluvias que a lo lejos se asomaba con un fuerte viendo dando un aviso de su pronta llegada.
Mientras muchos visitantes buscaban refugio yo me quedé allí emocionada, escuchando el sonido metálico de los tubos que chocaban con el viento. Algunos sentían miedo por el estruendo, pero para mí fue como si el monumento hablara, como si la Divina Pastora me recibiera con una sinfonía inesperada, poderosa y viva.
Este monumento, también conocido como el Manto de María fue inaugurado en 2016 y es considerado el monumento mariano más grande del mundo tiene 63 metros de altura y está formado por 3.772 tubos de aluminio, diseñados para crear una imagen cinética que puede verse desde más de 70 kilómetros de distancia. La advocación de la Divina Pastora llegó a Venezuela desde Sevilla en el siglo XVIII y desde entonces ha sido símbolo de fé, esperanza y protección para miles de personas. Cada 14 de enero, millones de devotos participan en una de las procesiones más grandes del mundo, caminando desde Santa Rosa hasta Barquisimeto.
Antes que llegara la lluvia, recorrí los espacios del monumento... Es un lugar amplio, perfecto para caminar, respirar y dejarse envolver por el paisaje, Me encantaron las artesanías llenas de color y arte, que exhibían los emprendedores locales. Compré algunos recuerdos para mi familia, cada uno con ese toque larense que habla de tradición y cariño.
Desde lo alto, pude observar parte de la ciudad, ver cómo la lluvia se aproximaba desde la distancia, y sentir que, aunque no hubo atardecer, el cielo me regaló otra forma de belleza.
La subida al monumento se hace por 296 escalones, y cada paso es una invitación a contemplar. Lo venía apreciando desde lejos, desde que me acercaba por carretera, y al estar allí frente a su inmensidad, entendí que no solo había llegado a un lugar.. Un momento de conexión, de emoción, de gratitud.
