Se terminaron mis vacaciones de verano hace sólo unos pocos y en esta vuelta al trabajo voy a rememorar un acontecimiento, por ahora, excepcional para los que habitamos en España. El apagón de luz que ocurrió hace ya unos meses. No se trata de quejarme, pues conozco la más que precaria situación que se vive en Venezuela o Cuba y la "normalidad"con la que ocurren a diario situaciones como ésta. --- >My summer vacation ended just a few days ago, and as I return to work, I am going to recall an event that, for now, is exceptional for those of us who live in Spain. >The power outage that happened a few months ago. I'm not complaining, as I know the extremely precarious situation in Venezuela and Cuba and the "normality" with which situations like this occur daily.

Mi intención solamente es transmitir como se vivió ese apagón nacional en Madrid y en día laborable. Un apagón del que todavía no hay explicación. Por lo excepcional del hecho, como ya he escrito, el motivo de la publicación es mostrar a las ciriosas y curiosos cómo funciona una gran ciudad en la que nunca ocurren sucesos como este (y como se arruinó mi día): el gran apagón. --- >My intention is simply to convey what it was like to experience that nationwide blackout in Madrid on a weekday. A blackout for which there is still no explanation.

>Due to the exceptional nature of the event, as I have already written, the reason for publishing this is to show curious readers how a big city where events like this never happen (and how my day was ruined) functions: the great blackout.

Todo comenzó aproximadamente a las 12 de la mañana. Acababa de finalizar una sesión on-line con un cliente y me encontraba preparando la próxima cuando saltó la luz de emergencia del centro en el que trabajo. Pensé en que la electricidad volvería pronto. Además, pensé que por el momento no tenía que preocuparme por la avería ya que mi ordenador portátil tenía la batería bastante cargada. --- >It all started at around 12 noon. I had just finished an online session with a client and was preparing for the next one when the emergency light came on at the center where I work. >I thought the power would come back on soon. Besides, I figured I didn't have to worry about the outage for the moment, as my laptop battery was fairly charged.

Pero pronto me dí cuenta de que la avería iba mucho más allá de un corte de luz, Internet también había colapsado. Bajé a la calle y en ese momento es cuando me di cuenta de que algo anormal estaba ocurriendo. El servicio del Metro estaba suspendido. Todos los comercios y grandes almacenes se encontraban sin luz y vacíos. --- >But I soon realized that the outage was much more than just a power cut; the internet had also crashed. I went down to the street, and that's when I realized that something unusual was happening. The subway service was suspended. All the shops and department stores were without power and empty.

Los semáforos tampoco funcionaban y la calle comenzaba a ser un pequeño caos. Viendo que era ya cerca de la una y que ni podía atender a mis clientes on-line ni mis clientes se podías desplazar a mi despacho decidí dar un paseo y observar lo que estaba ocurriendo. --- >The traffic lights weren't working either, and the street was starting to descend into chaos. Seeing that it was already around 1 p.m. and that I couldn't attend to my online clients, nor could my clients come to my office, I decided to take a walk and see what was happening.

Lo que más me llamó la atención fue la multiutud de personas que poblaban las calles, algo muy inusual a esas horas y en día laborable. La explicación parecía muy evidente. La calle se cubrió con las miles de personas que en esos momentos, como yo, se encontraban trabajano, con los cientos o miles de usuarios de metro que salieron obligados a la superficie, más las miles de personas que fueron sorprendidas comprando en los comercios de la zona. Miles de personas que nunca nubiero coincidido en las calles del centro de Madrid nos encontramos al mismo tiempo y en los mismo lugares a causa del gran apagón. --- >What caught my attention most was the multitude of people filling the streets, something very unusual at that time of day and on a weekday. The explanation seemed very obvious. The street was filled with thousands of people who, like me, were at work at that moment, along with hundreds or thousands of subway users who were forced to come to the surface, plus thousands of people who were caught shopping in the area's stores. Thousands of people who would never have coincided on the streets of downtown Madrid found ourselves in the same place at the same time because of the big blackout.

--- No funcionaban los cajeros automáticos de los bancos, no funcionaba internet, no funcionaban los teléfonos móviles... no funcionaban muchas de esas cosas que se han llegado a convertirse en una necesidad sin la cual parece que no podemos vivir. --- >The bank ATMs weren't working, the internet wasn't working, cell phones weren't working... many of those things that have become a necessity without which we seem unable to live weren't working.

En un determinado momento decidí volver a casa. Mi curiosidad por la avería y sus consecuencias se fue apagando. Me encontraba a una media hora andando o 40 minutos de la parada del autobús que me debía llevar a casa. Me encotraba en la zona de Argüelles y comencé a andar hcia la Plaza de Tirso de Molina. Durante el trayecto no dejaron de sonar las alarmas. El despliegue policial comenzó casi de inmediato a la avería. --- >At a certain point, I decided to go home. My curiosity about the breakdown and its consequences faded. I was about a half-hour walk or 40 minutes from the bus stop that would take me home. I was in the Argüelles area and started walking toward Plaza de Tirso de Molina. >During the journey, the alarms continued to sound. The police deployment began almost immediately after the breakdown.

Sobre las 13:00 am las bocas de metro estaban cerradas a los viajeros y custodiadas por agentes de seguridad. Aunque la presencia policial parecía que había traído algo de orden al tráfico durante todo el camino se podían ver personas cruzando las calles entre el tráfico sin temor a las consecencias de esa conducta de evidente riesgo. --- >At around 1:00 a.m., subway entrances were closed to passengers and guarded by security agents. Although the police presence seemed to have brought some order to traffic, people could still be seen crossing the streets between traffic without fear of the consequences of such obviously risky behavior.

Lo único que no colapsó fueron los autobuses urbanos. Por lo que se popdían ver paradas llenas de gente esperando ese posible autobús salvador. --- >The only thing that didn't collapse was the city bus service. Bus stops were filled with people waiting for that possible lifesaving bus.

Las imágenes hablan por si solas del caos vivido ese día, por lo que no voy escribir mucho más sobre lo ocurriod ese día. Sólo me queda mencionar algún aounte de mi experiencia ese día. --- >The images speak for themselves about the chaos experienced that day, so I won't write much more about what happened. I'll just mention a few things about my experience that day.

Tardé una cinco horas en llegar a casa. Cuando por fín me encontré de frente a la puerta del portal pude entrar gracias a mi llave metálica, la llave física. Los dispositvos eléctricos de entrada no funcionaban. La batería del teléfono estaba casi agotada aunque esto no fue un problema. Siempre guardo un teléfono móvil con la batería cargada. cambié la tarjeta y ya tenía un móvil opoerativo para cuando llegara la electricidad. Por suerte también tengo una radio de esas que funcionan con pilas y fue entonces cuando me enteré de la magnitud de la avería. Un apagón de electricidad e internet en todo el país. Si por la mañana las tiendas las vi vacías, por la tarde-noche ya se podían ver grandes colas para adquirir agua, pilas... y ¿papel higiénico? Puedo decir que a pesar del colapso de la elecricidad, de internet, de los cajeros de los bancos, de la telefonía... no fue un día en el que hubo mucho orden teniendo en cuenta todo los sucedido. Hasta aquí llegó el relato... mientras, continúan las imágenes. --- >It took me about five hours to get home. When I finally found myself in front of the door to the building, I was able to get in thanks to my metal key, the physical key. The electric entry devices weren't working. >My phone battery was almost dead, but that wasn't a problem. I always keep a cell phone with a charged battery. I changed the card and had a working cell phone by the time the power came back on. >Luckily, I also have one of those battery-powered radios, and that's when I found out the extent of the outage. A nationwide power and internet blackout. >In the morning, the stores were empty, but by the evening, there were long lines of people waiting to buy water, batteries... and toilet paper? >I can say that despite the collapse of the electricity, internet, ATMs, and telephone systems... it wasn't a day of much order, considering everything that had happened. >That's the end of the story... but the images continue.
