the town of Ulefoss is home to one of the oldest operating industries in Europe, Ulefos Jernværk established in 1657. historically it was well known for its iron production, especially wood stoves but also cannons and cannonballs and more. it is located where Eidselva river empties into Nørsjø lake by a waterfall which provides power to the industry. a century earlier sawmills had already been operating and while the mills are no longer in business the falls are still an important source of electric power to the area.
