An Exceptional Talent In The World Of Sculpture

As promised yesterday in my post here, today I'd like to show you more amazing sculptures by the same artist, Vince Bocskay, an extraordinary talent and you'll see why.

An Exceptional Talent In The World Of Sculpture.jpg

As I said yesterday, there was an article sharing an interview with the artist, which I didn't read as I didn't want to influence my thinking and vision. However, I read it after publishing the post and some of my suspicions were confirmed. Today I can tell you, there's a good amount of serenity, satire. I mean I saw that and suspected it, but the article confirms it too. All that said, let's see what I have prepared for you today.

Danaë - 2012

In Greek mythology, Danaë was an Argive princess and mother of the hero Perseus by Zeus. She was credited with founding the city of Ardea in Latium during the Bronze Age.

If you read my post yesterday, you know by now that the sculptor likes to feature females as oversized. Danaë's body is not quite oversized, but she has a drawer added. Very unusual but interesting.

Europe - 2022

This is a wonderful sculpture I've seen before, but again, can't remember where and when. It features our old continent and does it very well. Pretty much this is how it looks like in a transposed sense. Wars have been devastating Europe, now illegal immigrants abusing countries, individuals as well and so on.

Putting aside the abstract meaning of the clay sculpture and looking at the actual work, I find it amazing. Look at the form and how the cracks are formed on the surface, indicating old age.

Homage to Gustave Coubet - 2025

Jean Désiré Gustave Courbet (10 June 1819 – 31 December 1877) was a French painter who led the Realism movement in 19th-century French painting. Committed to painting only what he could see, he rejected academic convention and the Romanticism of the previous generation of visual artists. His independence set an example that was important to later artists, such as the Impressionists and the Cubists. Courbet occupies an important place in 19th-century French painting as an innovator and as an artist willing to make bold social statements through his work.

Now you may ask what this half-nude clay sculpture has to do with Gustave Coubet as Gustave was a man. Legit question, but there's an answer to that question.

Young Ladies on the Banks of the Seine, painted in 1856, provoked a scandal. Art critics accustomed to conventional, "timeless" nude women in landscapes were shocked by Courbet's depiction of modern women casually displaying their undergarments.

My best guest is, this clay statue painting is a reference to Coubet's Young Ladies on the Banks of the Seine painting. If you check the painting, the ladies look like wearing dresses, but according to the description, that type of garment was underwear. What Bocskay has created is the modern version. I like it.

Metamorphosis - 1978

I don't like this, so I'll let you tell me what you see here and whatever you want to share about it.

Charon's Arc - 2021

In Greek mythology, Charon or Kharon is a psychopomp, the ferryman of the Greek underworld. He carries the souls of those who have been given funeral rites across the rivers Acheron and Styx, which separate the worlds of the living and the dead.

After some search, I could not find any reference to Charon's arc, but it make sense based on what we know about Charon. The sculpture is exceptional. Look at those smooth surfaces and how the sculptor chose to sculpt the cover of the arc, like it was real canvas. Look at those wrinkles. I love it.

Look at how many mediums the sculpture has used. We've seen clay, metal, wood and the show is not over yet. Let's go to the other exhibition room, let's see what is hidden there.

Pax Trianonae - 2014

This is a painful one, even without knowing the story behind it. It shows a yoke, serving as a heavy press, pressing on some helmets. This in itself symbolizes subjugation and suppression, and that's exactly what the result of the Treaty of Trianon led to.

Looking further than the historical reference of the artwork, it's a really good one.

Adolescence - 2023

Another clay sculpture, but different style. Look at how simple it is, yet wonderful. Look at the facial expression of the girl. She looks really happy and the lose hat adds to the beauty of the artwork. Love it.

My Mother - 1975

Yesterday I posted the statue of his father, which was a clay statue. Today here's the statue of his mother. A stone statue featuring a simple, village woman. A lovely one. I bet every wrinkle of that face tells a story and you can see the kindness of the woman just by looking at her face. We don't know if his mother looked like the statue, but regardless, it's a very good one.

After seeing these art pieces, if you think the sculptor is not exceptionally talented, then ... you don't have an eye for art, no offense.

Let me know in a comment, what you think and if you have a favorite.
