Must be getting old, or I just go to too many exhibitions in a short period of time as today I came across a folder, created in July, with photos taken in July the 2nd and I see I haven't posted any of them yet. This would not be a problem, but I can't remember the exhibition either 😂. Yeah, shame on me, what can I say.
This was not a solo exhibition, as I see there were several artists exhibiting and there were mostly paintings.
At first glance, it give you the impression, that you're in the 19th, or the 20th century, based on the pairings and the frames, but that's not necessarily always the case.
A lovely landscape from 1921, which makes it 104 years old. What I love here is the visible texture of the canvas, the lovely colors and the frame. I have a thing for frames and firmly believe an inappropriate frame can ruin the whole experience, just as a good frame can raise the value of it. Both the color and the design has to match the painting, but it's not easy to get a healthy balance. This one has it all.
Ferencz Károly - Portrait With A Hat
An old gentleman from other times, dressed as the dress code required back in those days. I'm not sure if it's the self portrait of the artist, most likely not, but it's a good one.
Béla Balla - Hillside
Maybe it's just an illusion, but to me, it seems that something is burning there. It's a bit too dark for my taste, but that doesn't mean it's not good.
János Krizsán - Baia Mare, 1926
I've never been to Baia Mare to know if this scene is real, but have no reason either, to think it was not, in 1926. I don't know about you, but looking at it, it makes me feel calmness.
Fisherman
It's not a still life, but it's a moment of life, a moment of the fisherman's life. I've seen so many men fishing, especially elderly men and you can see the calmness on their face, literally. I love how the painter highlighted the straw hat of the man an the light on his shirt. I suppose it was golden hour. The frame is a bit too pompous for my taste, but it's ok, I guess.
Sándor Ziffer - Baia Mare
Not long ago, I posted a series of paintings with similar style, where silhouettes were outlined with black. I'm not saying this is, but it gives you the impression that it is. I like it. looks a bit rough, but I like it. The colors, mostly the yellow and orange make it enjoyable. In my eyes at least.
What I love about all the painting is the texture of the canvas. I don't know what kind of canvas these painters used back then, but I like it a lot.
Ferenc Ács - Landscape
It is my believe that each painting has its place and has to fit the design of the room. Maybe I'm wrong and I'm the only one who thinks this, but to me it seems like this painting would fit well with a 20th century living room, maybe of some well off people. I don't see it in a modern home. It's a nice landscape, but the frame takes you back in time.
Ferenc Ács - Landscape
None of these paintings are new, so I suppose, of better yet, I'm convinced they come from private collections.
Sándor Szolnay - Landscape With Tree
This is a particular one, because of those big leaves. It's fiction, or imaginary as we don't have such trees here, but that's not a problem as you can do anything when it comes to art, sky is the limit.
Jenő Pászk
While I was looking at these paintings and seeing the strict style, was thinking how much social pressure these painters had to endure back then. Today you can paint or draw pretty much anything you want and you can sell anything literally, if you find a way, but back then society was not as open minded as today and once shunned, you had no chance to succeed. I suppose there were some written and more unwritten rules, that had to be respected. And I'm not talking about communist countries, where you could lose your life over an tricky joke, but free countries. What do you think?
It's easy to sit in our cozy home and think whatever we want about these paintings, but we never know what these artists had to endure or go through, on social or emotional level.
Now come the usual question, which one is your favorite and another one, that is not usual: would you hang such a painting on your wall, that reminds you of another century? Let's see who's brave enough today 😎
