Of course. We remember songs by their melody. Or the experiences they evoke. Many of them have the added beauty of featuring verses that shine like poetic pearls; others (perhaps the most important ones) teach us useful things for life, for relating better to others. Isn't that what living is all about?
Can we learn from ballads, or are they only good for having a good time or for catharsis? Well, the ballad Tengo mucho que aprender de ti (I Have So Much to Learn From You), a hit from 1980 sung by Emmanuel, might seem like a good poem to boost a girl's self-esteem. You can even dedicate it to your girlfriend:
I have so much to learn from you, my love How you forget arguments How you keep promises How you guide our steps every day.
If your emotion is sincere, and you're not just a vile flatterer, this is a profound declaration of love. Let me explain. Usually, couples get upset due to character flaws or incompatibilities. This is followed by a fight, resentment, and the dreaded phrase "I need some space." But in the ballad we're referring to, the expressed attitude is one of gentle nobility, with a true feeling of... reconciliation? Or perhaps recognition, not of the other's flaws, but of their virtues?
As if the singer is saying: "I've noticed, my love, that you have many qualities that I lack, and I would like to grasp them, to take you as an example, as a paradigm for how our relationship should be, and even human relationships in general."
It's an attitude of admiration. The voice that speaks, obviously that of a man in love, never stops observing concrete facts, noticeable in everyday practice:
Teach me, teach me To be happy, like you are To give love, like you give it to me To forgive like you forgive Without ever remembering the hurt again, never again.
Respecting your partner's qualities and letting them know is a behavior that makes you grow and leads to the flourishing (and fruit-bearing) of a harmonious romance, a solid refuge against the assaults of everyday problems.
It makes me nostalgic (and now proud) to have heard this ballad repeatedly on the radio during my childhood and adolescence. Along with its melody, it somehow shaped my notion of beauty. I won't be chauvinistic, assuming the prejudice that "everything was better in the past," but considering that today in Cuba there is so much music with crude rhythms and deplorable lyrics, it's a relief to return to these pop classics, to an era where we had the humility and the courage to openly express our enchantment with spiritual and loving beauty; the "temerity" to tell the girl:
I have so much to learn from you, my love Your sweetness and strength Your way of giving yourself Your determination to win me over every day.

Obvio, recordamos las canciones por su melodía. O las vivencias que nos evocan. Muchas de ellas tienen la belleza añadida de ostentar versos como si fueran perlas poéticas; otras (quizás las más importantes), nos enseñan algunas cosas útiles para la vida, para relacionarnos mejor con los demás. ¿Vivir no se trata de eso?
¿Se puede aprender de las baladas, o solo nos sirven para pasar gratos momentos o hacer catarsis? Bueno, la balada Tengo mucho que aprender de ti, éxito de 1980, cantada por Emmanuel, puede parecer un buen poema para levantarle la autoestima a la chica. Incluso, se la puedes dedicar a tu novia:
Tengo mucho que aprender de ti, amor Como olvidas los enfados Como cumples las promesas Como guías nuestros pasos cada día.

Si tu emoción es sincera, y no eres un vil adulón, se trata de una profunda declaración de amor. Me explico. Por lo común, las parejas se disgustan, debido a los defectos o incompatibilidades de carácter. Le sigue la bronca, el rencor y la temible frase “Necesito un tiempo”. Pero en la balada a la que nos referimos, la actitud expresada es de una suave nobleza, con verdadero sentimiento de ¿reconciliación? o ¿reconocimiento, no de los defectos, sino de las virtudes del otro?
Como si el que canta dijera: “He notado, amor, que tienes muchas cualidades de las cuales carezco, y me gustaría aprehenderlas, tomarte de ejemplo, de paradigma para el modo en que debe ser nuestra relación, incluso, las relaciones humanas en general”.
Es una actitud de admiración. La voz que habla, obviamente de un hombre enamorado, nunca deja de observar hechos concretos, que se advierten en la práctica cotidiana:
Enséñame, enséñame A ser feliz, como lo eres tú A dar amor, como me lo das tú A perdonar como perdonas tú Sin recordar el daño nunca más, nunca más.

Respetar las cualidades de tu pareja y hacérselo saber, es una conducta que te hace crecer y logra el florecimiento (y el frutecimiento), de un romance armónico, de un refugio sólido contra las agresiones de los problemas cotidianos.
Me causa nostalgia (y ahora orgullo), haber escuchado esta balada repetidamente por la radio durante mi niñez y adolescencia. Junto a su melodía, de alguna manera, configuró mi noción de lo bello. No voy a ser chovinista, asumiendo el prejuicio de que “todo tiempo pasado fue mejor”, pero teniendo en cuenta que hoy en Cuba abunda tanta canción de ritmo marrano y letra deleznable, resulta un alivio regresar a estos clásicos de la música pop, a una época donde teníamos la humildad y ¿la valentía?, de expresar abiertamente nuestro encanto por la belleza espiritual y amorosa; la “temeridad” de decirle a la chica:
Tengo mucho que aprender de ti, amor Tu dulzura y fortaleza Tu manera de entregarte Tu tesón por conquistarme cada día.
