Hola a toda la comunidad. Esta es mi participación a la iniciativa propuesta por @hiveargentina sobre uno de los animalitos menos favorecidos en nuestra sociedad actual, los perros callejeros. Invito a participar, a los usuarios @donasycafe y @amorxamor.
¿Has ayudado a algún animal en situación de calle?
Cuando estaba en la universidad, a finales de cuarto año, nos llevaron de práctica a uno de los montes más lejanos de Pinar del Río, la provincia más occidental en Cuba.
En aquel monte vivía una pequeña manada de perros callejeros que se refugiaban en el patio del campamento donde nos albergaron. Uno de los perros callejeros, hembra, estaba recién parida y solía dejar a la única cría que le sobrevivió, bajo la protección de un tanque de agua.
Un día que la perra fue a buscar comida, como hacía todos los días, dejando a su bebé solo por largas horas. Me le acerqué. Había visto al cachorro de pocos días de nacido una o dos veces. Vivía en malas condiciones, con su pancita bien gordita de tantos bichos que tenía adentro.
Recuerdo que me agaché y solo pretendía acariciarlo e irme a lavar las manos inmediatamente. Pero entonces, el bebé comenzó a jugar conmigo, me mordía mi dedo y luego me pasaba su diminuta lenguita, dándome cariño.
Después de ese momento sentí que no quería dejarlo en ese fin del mundo para que muriera como el resto de sus hermanos. Lo tomé y me lo traje a la capital. Fue todo un dilema porque lo tuve que esconder durante todo el trayecto del viaje y cuando llegué a la casa mi mamá no quería que un perro sucio, tan pequeño y lleno de bichos viviera bajo su mismo techo.
Por suerte, mi tío, que en ese momento vivía con nosotras, la convenció y el perrito, que resultó ser hembra: la perrita, se pudo quedar durante un largo tiempo. Más tarde, cuando creció y logré desparasitarla completamente, la llevé a vivir a la finca de un campesino de Guanabacoa. Allí está actualmente corriendo libre por todas partes y siendo feliz.
¿Conoces alguna organización que se encargue del rescate de perros callejeros?
En Cuba existe una organización sin ánimo de lucro que se encarga de luchar por defender los derechos de todos los animales cubanos. Su nombre es Bienestar Animal Cuba (BAC). Realmente me encanta lo que hacen en BAC, son chicas y chicos con un gran amor hacia los animales.
Recientemente pudieron comprar una casa de acogida para animales callejeros, dentro de los cuales se incluyen mayormente a los perros sin hogar. Esto lo pudieron lograr gracias a las donaciones de sus seguidores, dentro y fuera de Cuba
¿Consideras que la esterilización es suficiente para ayudar a los perros de la calle?
No considero que sea suficiente, los perros son animales que necesitan amor, cuidado, respeto, alimentos, agua...Ellos han evolucionado de tal forma que logran amar a los seres humanos y de alguna forma muchos son dependientes de las atenciones que le podamos brindar, incluso para alimentarse. Son tan fieles, que algunos nunca logran llegar a reponerse de un abandono o de la muerte de su dueño. La calle es terrible para cualquier ser indefenso de este mundo y más para los animales que no pueden hablar ni entender.
¿Adoptarías a un perro callejero?
Me encantaría adoptar un perrito para que tuviera una familia y fuera feliz. Sé todos los cuidados que lleva este tipo de mascota, es como un eterno bebé. Creo que lleva tantas atenciones como un ser humano. Actualmente, no tengo ni el tiempo, ni las condiciones para adoptar a uno. Por esa razón, hoy en día, no podría traer conmigo a un perro callejero, pero tal ves en el futuro lo pueda volver a hacer.
¿Es verdad que un perro callejero adoptado resulta más dócil y agradecido que uno comprado?
No lo creo así, todo depende de la personalidad del perro y de cómo el dueño es capaz de educarlo. Por ejemplo, la perrita que rescaté de la calle cuando era una bebé, a medida que crecía fuimos viendo que no era nada dócil, mucho menos agradecida; todo lo contrario, era fresca, respondona y no dejaba entrar ningún tipo de visitas a la casa. Sin embargo, el perro que rescataron mis vecinos no es así, es súper cariñoso, obediente, sociable y no le ladra a nadie.
Soy de las que cree que los perros adoptan la personalidad de los dueños, por más que duela reconocerlo 😁.
Estigmas con respecto a los perros callejeros.
Algunas personas creen que los perros de raza son más fieles a las personas que los perros callejeros. No podría asegurarlo porque nunca he tenido un perro de raza pura.
Las personas suelen evitar acariciar a los callejeros por medidas higiénicas, lo cual es toralmente comprensible.
Otras personas se sienten más seguras cuando recogen de las calles a los que son bebés porque se ven adorables y requieren menos atenciones, pero muchas veces cuando crecen los arrojan a la calle sin piedad.
Al final, me alegro de haber rescatado a aquella perrita bebé de un lugar tan remoto y difícil para traerla a la capital, pues la salvé del destino con el que había nacido. Es una sobreviviente 😁. Lo haría otra vez, pero en estos momentos con mayor prudencia para evitarme un montón de problemas que tuve en el pasado. Ahora también existen otras vías de rescate, pues BAC-Habana tiene sus puertas abiertas para recibir a cualquier animalito abandonado. Ellos, allí, saben cómo cuidarlos y promueven una adopción sana para que todos logren encontrar una familia donde puedan ser felices.

Have you ever helped an animal living on the streets?
When I was at university, near the end of my fourth year, we were taken for a field practice to one of the most remote forests in Pinar del Río, the westernmost province of Cuba.
In that forest lived a small pack of stray dogs who took shelter in the yard of the camp where we stayed. One of the stray dogs, a female, had just given birth and used to leave the only surviving pup under the protection of a water tank.
One day, when the mother dog went to look for food, as she did every day, leaving her baby alone for long hours, I approached him. I had seen the few-days-old puppy once or twice; he lived in poor conditions, with a belly swollen from so many parasites inside.
I remember that I crouched down intending only to pet him and then quickly wash my hands. But then the puppy started playing with me, biting my finger and then licking it gently, showing affection.
After that moment, I felt I did not want to leave him in that forgotten place to die like the rest of his siblings. I took him and brought him to the capital. It was quite a dilemma because I had to hide him throughout the trip, and when I arrived home, my mother did not want a dirty, tiny, parasite-infested dog living under her roof.
Fortunately, my uncle, who was living with us at the time, convinced her, and the puppy, who turned out to be female, was able to stay for a long time. Later, when she grew up and I managed to fully deworm her, I took her to live on a farmer’s estate in Guanabacoa. She is currently running free everywhere and happy.
Do you know any organization that rescues stray dogs?
In Cuba, there is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting for the rights of all Cuban animals called Bienestar Animal Cuba (BAC). Here is their Facebook page if you want to learn more about what they do or if you are interested in supporting them in any way:

I really love what they do at BAC; they are people with a great love for animals. Recently, they were able to purchase a shelter house for stray animals, mostly homeless dogs. They achieved this thanks to donations from their followers both inside and outside of Cuba.
Do you consider sterilization enough to help street dogs?
I don't consider it enough. Dogs are animals that need love, care, respect, food, and water. They have evolved in such a way that they manage to love human beings, and in some way, many are dependent on the care we can provide them, even for feeding. They are so loyal that some never manage to recover from abandonment or the death of their owner. The street is terrible for any defenseless being in this world and especially for animals that cannot speak or understand.
Would you adopt a street dog?
I would love to adopt a dog so that it would have a family and be happy. I know all the care that this type of pet requires; it is like an eternal baby. I believe it needs as much attention as a human being. Currently, I do not have the time or conditions to adopt one. For that reason, nowadays, I could not bring a street dog with me, but maybe in the future, I will be able to do so.
¿Is it true that a adopted street dog turns out to be more docile and grateful than a purchased one?
I don’t believe so; it all depends on the dog's personality and how the owner is able to train it. For example, the little female dog I rescued from the street when she was a puppy, as she grew up we saw she was not docile at all, much less grateful; on the contrary, she was bold, sassy, and didn’t allow any kind of visitors into the house. However, the dog my neighbors rescued is not like that—he is super affectionate, obedient, sociable, and doesn’t bark at anyone.
I’m one of those who believes dogs adopt their owners’ personality, as hard as that might be to admit 😁.
Stigmas regarding street dogs
Some people believe that purebred dogs are more loyal to people than street dogs. I couldn't say for sure since I’ve never had a purebred dog.
People often avoid petting street dogs for hygiene reasons, which is totally understandable.
Other people feel safer adopting street puppies because they look adorable and require less attention, but many times when they grow up, they are mercilessly abandoned back on the streets.
In the end, I’m glad I rescued that puppy from such a remote and difficult place to bring her to the capital, as I saved her from the fate she was born into. She’s a survivor 😁. I would do it again, but now with greater caution to avoid many problems I had before. There are also other rescue options nowadays, such as BAC-Habana, which has open doors to receive any abandoned animals. They know how to care for them and promote responsible adoption so that every animal can find a family where they can be happy.
