At home, power outages are more frequent than we would like. Sometimes they surprise us in the middle of our routine, interrupting homework, classes, work or simply a moment of rest. However, we have learned to adapt. Instead of letting frustration get the better of us, we take a deep breath, let go of the complaint... and look for a new way to make the most of the time.
On this particular day, the cut was four hours. Fortunately, it was still afternoon and we had natural light coming in through the windows, which opened up the possibility of doing something we love: creating with our hands. It was then that my daughter proposed a wonderful idea. With an accomplice smile she said to me: “What if we made little felt dolls... but as a surprise, one for each of us?” I thought it was a fun and tender idea. I accepted without thinking twice.

En casa, los cortes eléctricos son más frecuentes de lo que quisiéramos. A veces nos sorprenden en medio de la rutina, interrumpiendo tareas, clases, trabajo o simplemente el momento de descanso. Sin embargo, hemos aprendido a adaptarnos. En lugar de dejarnos llevar por la frustración, respiramos profundo, soltamos la queja… y buscamos una nueva forma de aprovechar el tiempo.
Este día en particular, el corte fue de cuatro horas. Afortunadamente, aún era de tarde y teníamos luz natural entrando por las ventanas, lo que nos abrió la posibilidad de hacer algo que nos encanta: crear con nuestras manos. Fue entonces cuando mi hija me propuso una idea maravillosa. Con una sonrisa cómplice me dijo: “¿Y si hacemos muñequitos de fieltro… pero como sorpresa, uno para cada una?” Me pareció una idea divertida y llena de ternura. Acepté sin pensarlo dos veces.

Together we selected the materials: pieces of felt of various colors, needles, threads, scissors, a bit of stuffing and a lot of imagination. Then, each one took her space and her time. We couldn't watch each other's project, because the idea was to surprise each other with the final result. However, we did share curious glances, sly laughs, and guessing phrases like "It's probably a kawaii-style ice cream or maybe a fried egg! From time to time I would ask my daughter to thread my needle (yes, I'm at that age now :D). We had a nice time.
Each one took pictures of her process, as a kind of secret visual diary that we would later share with excitement. I decided to make a little frog, with big eyes and a cute expression. I wanted it to look cute and playful. As I sewed, I thought about how important it is to give ourselves moments to share with our loved ones.
My daughter, for her part, chose to make an avocado with a smiley face. It seemed like a perfect choice when I finally saw it: it was an avocado, tender, with a bow on its head and a seed in the center that looked like it was pregnant. That little avocado seemed to have a life of its own, and its energy radiated sweetness. I didn't imagine it, and I was even more surprised to see how much thought I had put into every detail.
Let me show you the process:
As I mentioned before, all you need are some scraps of felt, thread and needle. Each one cut the silhouette or shape of the character in felt, front and back side.
#### ESPAÑOL
Juntas seleccionamos los materiales: trozos de fieltro de varios colores, agujas, hilos, tijeras, un poco de relleno y mucha imaginación. Después, cada una tomó su espacio y su tiempo. No podíamos mirar el proyecto de la otra, porque la idea era sorprendernos mutuamente con el resultado final. Sin embargo, sí compartíamos miradas curiosas, risas disimuladas, y frases intentando adivinar como “¡Seguro es un helado en estilo kawaii o quizás un huevo frito!” “¡Ya verás te va a encantar!”. De tanto en tanto le pedía mi hija que me enhebrara la aguja (si, ya estoy en esa edad :D). Pasamos un bonito momento.
Cada una tomó fotos de su proceso, como una especie de diario visual secreto que luego compartiríamos con emoción. Yo decidí hacer una ranita, con ojos grandes y una expresión simpática. Quería que tuviera un aire tierno y juguetón. Mientras cosía, pensaba en lo importante que es darse momentos para compartir con nuestros seres queridos.
Mi hija, por su parte, eligió hacer un aguacate con carita feliz. Me pareció una elección perfecta cuando finalmente lo vi: Era una aguacatica, tierna, con un lazo en la cabeza y una semilla en el centro parecía estar embarazada. Ese pequeño aguacate parecía tener vida propia, y su energía irradiaba dulzura. No lo imaginé, y me sorprendió aún más ver cuánto había pensado en cada detalle.
Déjame mostrarte el proceso:
Como te comenté antes, sólo necesitas algunos retazos de fieltro, hilo y aguja. Cada una cortó la silueta o forma del personaje en fieltro, lado delantero y trasero.

We have sewn the characters all around, leaving an opening where the stuffing is inserted.
Hemos cosido los personajes alrededor, dejamos una abertura en donde se introduce el relleno.
We add with stitches and thread the details of the face, eyes, mouths, the blush of the cheeks.
Agregamos con puntadas e hilo los detalles del rostro, ojos, bocas, el rubor de las mejillas.
Finally, our finished characters are ready for the surprise delivery!

Surpriseeee!
When it came time for the “exchange of surprises,” we were both thrilled. We laughed when we saw our characters, admired each other's work, and celebrated how, in the midst of an uncomfortable situation, we had created something valuable. Not only for the object itself, but for what it represented: the time shared, the complicity, the love put into each stitch.
Crafts, art and sewing are more than hobbies for us. They are bridges. They allow us to communicate, to laugh together, to focus on something beautiful, and above all, to create memories that we treasure deeply. You don't always need technology, electricity, or big tools to make magic. Sometimes, the most powerful thing is simply the willingness to be present and let the creativity flow.
This little felt character project reminded us that in the gray days, bright moments can also be born. It taught us that creativity is not extinguished by light, and that love, expressed through the hands, has immense strength.
So, if one day you find yourself without electricity or a plan, find a piece of fabric, a thread and an idea. Maybe you'll end up not only creating something beautiful, but also an indelible memory with those you love the most.

¡Sorpresaaaa!
Cuando llegó el momento del “intercambio de sorpresas”, ambas estábamos emocionadas. Nos reímos al ver nuestros personajes, admiramos el trabajo de la otra, y celebramos cómo, en medio de una situación incómoda, habíamos creado algo valioso. No solo por el objeto en sí, sino por lo que representaba: el tiempo compartido, la complicidad, el amor puesto en cada puntada.
Las manualidades, el arte y la costura son más que pasatiempos para nosotras. Son puentes. Nos permiten comunicarnos, reír juntas, concentrarnos en algo bello, y sobre todo, crear recuerdos que atesoramos profundamente. No siempre se necesita tecnología, ni electricidad, ni grandes herramientas para hacer magia. A veces, lo más poderoso es simplemente la disposición de estar presentes y dejar que la creatividad fluya.
Este pequeño proyecto de personajes en fieltro nos recordó que en los días grises también pueden nacer momentos luminosos. Nos enseñó que la creatividad no se apaga con la luz, y que el amor, expresado a través de las manos, tiene una fuerza inmensa.
Así que, si algún día te encuentras sin electricidad o sin plan, busca un retazo de tela, un hilo y una idea. Tal vez termines no solo creando algo hermoso, sino también un recuerdo imborrable con quienes más quieres.
