I think the best comparism mechanism is between the losers and the winners, comparing losers based on hierarchy can mean to encourage their failure. This because they can be bold and not take necessary corrections in doing the right thing next time since they are better than someone in their failure.
A loser telling another loser that I am better than you because I scored more points, meanwhile both of them are classified as losers.
I guess we can also say that a loser who takes correction is better than a loser who refuses to take correction, in the end, he will amend his ways from the correction taken and eventually win.
