Own goal is associated with football. I am not aware if there are other sports that have the concept of an own goal. But I am familiar with football and own goal. An own goal occurs when a player scores in his own goal post. When this happens, it is usually strange because such player is actually doing the opposite of what he was paid to do. He should score in the opponent's goal post, not his. This act becomes painful when the own decides the game and his team lost as a result of the own goal. The fans most especially will react badly with such player.
I describe own goal as shooting yourself in the leg, instead of shooting your opponent. It is the same concept as own goal, in my opinion.
Even though an own goal is usually a mistake, most people don't want to believe it is.
