Music as defined is the combination of sounds pleasant to the hearing. Music is age-long with us humans as we have the ability to recognize and appreciate pleasant sounds. Music has found expressions in human existence and living such as in culture, religion, occupation, learning/education, sports and others. Music comes in various styles in which christian music which some others referred to as gospel music is part of. This style of music found expression as it relates religion and by it, music forms a major part and plays an important role.
Christian music can come inform of church music whic involves congregational music, sight singing using music notation like hymnals, classical songs etc. Also, Christian music also found expression in various events and programs such as revival meetings, christening ceremony and such likes. Infact, in Africa which is colonised by the British, church music found expression in the schools been set-up then and births the learning of music in schools then even as renowned organists, music directors, singers are produced then. Christian music is not limited to church music alone though there is a change in its form now.
Nowadays, christian music are now been recorded and made accessible on music channels, blogs, media platforms etc, thanks to the technological evolution and modernisation. Also, christian music also referred to as gospel music by some is now expressed through concerts, events and programms as an outdoor event outside the four walls of church. Take for example, gospel artistes now hold music events in stadium both locally and internationally e.g. The Experience by House on the Rock in Nigeria, Mass Movement, The Outpouring, Halleluyah Challenge etc. Christian music is known for its characteristic soul-lifting ability, inspiring lyrical content, organised arrangements, uniformed performance and so on.
One of the foremost and thriving music style is christian music though it has evolved overtime. One of my thrill about this type of music and the reason for its popularity is the originality involved in it and the impact on the listeners even years after been produced or performed. For example, some hymnals we still sing today are born of inspiration and life experiences of the music writers. Personally, i was raised in this style of music right from early age as a chorister and as an instrumentalist which i am still doing up to date. I believe this type of music is more popular because of its multifaceted dimensions/expressions, its continuity as seen over the years and it been widespread even as the religion is spread locally and internationally.
In all, the choice of a popular music style is based on individual views and opinions which ought to be respected and appreciated. The good thing is that music no matter the style is still one of the good things of life that we have, is and will still enjoy.
