According to the Maslow's hierarchy of needs, shelter or accomodation is one of the three (3) basic needs of we humans with the other two been food and clothing. However, because of modernization, civilization, bad governmental policies in some countries, increasing rate of inflation amidst many other factors, accommodation is now a thing of big concern even as there is increasing rate of homelessness. Back in the olden days, there is still this communal or extended family living which in a way prevented homelessness, but now, is far eroded in our society.
In my country here in Africa, it's either one rent his/her accommodation from the house owner directly or from those we call here caretakers or agents. The later is the worse as the unchecked activities/operations of these people has led to the exhorbitant hike in rentage of the limited accommodation. Infact, some of this "expensive" houses when properly investigated became so as a result of the unscrupulous operation/demand of these so-called agents as against the owners know about. Ain addition, the condition of these houses may not be so good even as some will definitely require renovations.
Part of the things i believe everyone searching for a good accommodation should be on the look out for is firstly making personal findings about the desired accommodation from the neighbors as some truth maybe revealed. Also, all obvious renovations should be done and completed before moving in as often at times, it ended up been a broken promise after one has moved in. In addition, there should be a proper legal documentation between the owners/caretakers and the person intending to rent the accommodation as this may be the only saving evidence/prove when there is a need for legal engagements.
In addition, the electricity supply should be considered especially if no debt is left on the prepaid meter by the former occupants. Also, the water supply and access to a major road. On the otherhand as a house owner, i will prefer couples especially the young ones to be my tenants and also, i can give consideration to single folks of good/reputable background with a known legitimate job/work. There have been instances where because of greed many house owners let out their apartment to people of shrewd and dubious background and work which led them to face serious litigations as the one harbouring such people in their apartment.
In all, i think the government needs to step in to provide more subsidized houses to its citizens and to curtail the menace caused by these house agents as they are making life unbearable to people. Also, i will always counsel that for anything relating to business, accommodation and all, a legal paperwork of memorandum is of essence as this will put everyone involved in check as against doing things outside that which was agreed on. Everyone deserves a home and in all, we should put love and humanity in consideration even as whatever anyone does today will be a story tomorrow.
