LIVING HEALTHY THROUGH LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS

Living and loving life can only happen when one is healthy. Health is key to humanity and existence, hence, it shouldn't be joked with. Many activities we engage in endangers us to bad health and more importantly, modernisation can be a contributory factor to ill-health if not well managed. Medications are substances gotten from either natural or synthetic means with therapeutic abilities and used for such. Disease conditions are managed with medications as a means of therapy. However, there are some conditions that results from unwholesome (unhealthful) practices we engaged in or we are exposed to which can be debilitating.

In any therapy, there is the medication approach and non-medication approach. The non-medication approach could be a lifestyle modification, change of habit, diet change, change of environment to disconnect from certain harmful exposure etc. As a healthcare professional with a daily first-hand experience of directly relating with patients/people, i can boldly say that lifestyle modifications works if adhered to. For example, i once had some series of patients who do have frequent fungal infections and has taken some medications but it still re-occured. On getting to my healthcare facility, i consulted them and found out that they need to modify or adjust the way they do/handle somethings. It's always a success with no re-occurence even as they adhere.

Another practical example was about patients coming down with malaria often. By my enquiry, i found out that this is as a result of constant exposure to mosquitoes due to bushy environment, not sleeping under insecticide treated nets (ITN), non-usage of mosquito repellants or sprays, non-fumigation of environment, unkept drainage etc. So, i counselled the patients on the need to engage one or two of the above to reduce the frequency of recurrence if not eliminating it. These also works well with positive feedbacks gotten. That's why i always counsel people that drugs don't work like magic and are not foods, there are steps to be taken by individuals aswell for a rounded therapy.

Personally, there was a time that i worked abit on my nutrition and i reduced the intake of some drinks especially the carbonated ones and i got good results doing so. Unhealthy lifestyles of smoking (either actively or passively), alcohol intake, sedentary lifestyle, constant exposure to allergens like smokes, dusts etc can negatively impact on one's health. Therefore, everything isn't about medication even as behavioral/lifestyle modifications are good adjunct therapies in managing some disease conditions for a rounded and quick recovery/healing.

Therefore, each person needs to identify risks to his/her health and work on them inorder to live and stay healthy. Health is indeed wealth and hence, shouldn't be joked with or left to chance. Not all disease, conditions needs drugs and even though it maybe needed, a careful observation and sincere adherence is needed to manage some and to be in good health.
