Someone once said: "If knowledge is costly, try ignorance". Education or to be learned is one of the pivots of progress and development anyone can have. Infact, it is a great asset any parent or guardian can give to their wards (children). One of the greatest treasures which only few people had then was to be educated. Infact, it came with a huge cost like trekking long distances, inadequate learning aids, lack of manpower etc then, but many of our fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers endured it and got western education as brought by the missionaries then.
The tide has changed now even as we have easy access, manpower but yet, the zeal is lacking in many because of unemployment, poverty, inconsistent/unfavourable government policies and so on. School affords us the opportunity to be literate i.e. ability to read and write. But in addition, schooling/education is a means to an end which is having an insight and reasoning about life and making a personal wholesome decision unto positivity. It is sad when many restricts themselves only to their course of study or discipline whereas they have that natural ability, talent or gift which can be refined for the positive if only they open their mind to it.
As fondly believed here, there is a whole lot of difference between going to school and school passing through us as individuals. The truth is that what individuals make out of life via been educated still lies with such individuals and not the institution or certificate bagged. I have personally seen many people doing currently what they didn't earn as a degree or certificate in school. Personally, i feel that getting degrees is still worth it even as i agreed that some of our school curriculum should be reviewed to met the current global realities and standards. Illiteracy and ignorance can be fatal even as i believed that "readers are indeed leaders of tomorrow".
Personally, i was trained as a Pharmacist in the University and I'm currently practicing, however, i still have some other things I learnt and do which related to my University education and is relevant in what i do on daily basis. The first is about my music endeavor even as it became better through meeting and interacting with some of the best instrumentalists then. Also, I'm also into business now even as the fundamentals of business and administration i learnt back then is really helping out now even when i never thought of having to do a business. I know a junior colleague who is into something entirely different i.e. career shift.
A native adage here says that: "An untrained child will destroy a built legacy". Schooling or been educated is a training which equips for life and destiny for as many who are ready to learn and not only "money" driven as it is now common with today's youth who despise knowledge for money not knowing that applied knowledge brings wealth, fame and riches, not just money. Therefore, it's good to get educated and bag "relevant" degrees, it will definitely be useful as no good knowledge is a waste. Thanks so much for reading even as comments and contributions are welcomed.
