Good afternoon Hiveworld and I hope all is well with you. My weekend has been largely uneventful but as always a welcome break from the grindstone.

Here is one from the archives I created which is heavily inspired by R Digi. The vibes from Ryan's photographs is out there and his stream is seriously worth a visit. One of those photographers who just have an eye for a composition and his light work is sublime. www.flickr.com/photos/r-digi Although he's not posted for a while go and have a look at his awesome stream.

Here I lit myself from both sides from behind my back for the silhouette using a torch. I had to light the opposite side of my body with each hand to avoid too much ghosting. Next ran the black fibre optics from www.lightpaintingbrushes.com gelled blue all over my head and torso then bursting out of the top of my head. That's the blue smokey effect which I love so much. Next I replaced the lens cap and ventured downstairs to the kitchen where I'd already set up another tripod pointing at some pinpricked card hung off a couple of light stands. I backlit this using my gelled torch paying particular attention to the middle of the card for the starbursts and lens flare bursting out of my chest.

I need to get my cardboard stencils out again as they are so effective in adding more layers and depth to a shot. I find the adding of accents like this really takes a shot to the next level. So often when I started out I'd be in too much of a rush to end the exposure but with a few more minutes adding elements like this you can reap the rewards.

All shot during a single long exposure in complete darkness.

WHAT IS LIGHTPAINTING?

Lightpainting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or to shine a point of light directly at the camera, or by moving the camera itself during exposure. Nothing is added or removed in post processing.
