Happy new month to everyone on this sphere. I want to celebrate everyone that made it to another new month called September. I pray that this new month would be a great one for all of us. When I saw this topic, so many thoughts were running down my heart. I had to take a deep reflection into how I started my life in secondary where my government teacher expand my depth of understanding. I was taught different stratas of government and what it entails. For the sake of this post, I would like to share what democracy is, the challenges and how is being practiced in Nigeria today and perhaps share other deeper perspectives.
What's democracy? It's the type of government that the power lies within the jurisdiction of the people. Someone said is the government of the people, for the people and by the people. This also means a kind of system of government that is centered on people. Democracy focuses on the people, how they live, what they do and how they want it to be. These are the idea thing that democracy entails but it's quite unfortunate that reverse is the case in our present day system of government.
Democracy kind of government is not a dictatorship system where one person decides everything and the seat of power is monopolize. In Democracy it's the people that elect the credible candidate they want and suh individual could be removed if he's not performing because the power is in the hands of the people. There is equity and people tends to have their rights being properly exercised.
Democracy system in my dear country Nigeria is better than the former system of Government we have where the military are the ones that take over the helm of all affairs. No citizen had the singular right of speech or anything. Democracy is fairly ok compared to other systems of government. I would like to share some of the benefits of democracy in Nigeria that I have known. Actually Democratic system of government started in 1999.
Democracy gives the opportunity for virtually everyone to be part of the government either directly or indirectly. Previously I never knew of any dividends of government not until democracy came on board. There is full representation either by constituency or by ward. From the top arm of government we have the house of representative and Senate while at the state level we have house of assembly and at the local government we have councillor. All these were structured to aid the spread of benefits from government to the people at the grassroots.
The impact of democracy has also brought about opportunities and equality to an extent though this can't be hundred percent. It has created an avenue where potentials can be properly explored for maximum impact across all strata of government. It's good to note that more people were gainfully employed during the democratic system of government than the military even though there are challenges right now.
Democracy has been able to unite and bond together many regions across the nation. Presently we have about six geopolitical zones which helps to step down many dividends to the lower class. Many times some of these benefits doesn't get to the rightful persons.
Some of the challenges of democratic system of government are; corruption which has eaten deep into so many sectors today. Lack of good roads is also a challenge. There is high rate of insecurity across many regions of Nigeria. The unity that democracy ought to bring has been replaced ethnicity, tribalism, religion etc. These has scattered most communities today especially in my area. Infact in Nigeria, democracy is just a name because people are suffering.
Thanks for reading through.
