Fouth Book In August: "Le Cycle de Pendragon, tome 1: Taliesin" by Stephen Lawhead

Today I finished the 2025 International Booker Prize winner "Heart Lamp" by Banu Mushtaq (translation from Kannada to English by Deepa Bhasthi). The original stories were written in Kannada, a language I was unaware of but spoken by 65 million people! The stories are based around the lives of Muslim women, families and patriarchy in Southern India. I enjoyed the book, and recommend you read the translator's note at the end too.

Today, I'm starting the first book in the Pendragon Cycle by Stephen Lawhead, Taliesin.

I've never read any of these books but I remember picking them up in bookshops when I was an adolescent (the first book came out in 1987). For some reason I never bought them. Maybe it was because I'd read The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and didn't want to go back to the Arthurian legends.

Anyway, I found books 2 (Merlin) and 3 (Arthur) in the series in English in our local second hand bookshop. I don't like to read books out of the order in which they're written so I looked online for the first book but could only find a reasonably priced version in French, so that's what I bought.

Let's hope I enjoy it after waiting nearly 40 years to read it! 🤣🤪😱
