What's up people? I'm just popping in after months without a cell phone but I'm not going to give too many explanations about this and that. I went that way, then that way, until I got here 😉.
Encontré esta linda casita aquí en Paraguay, a muy bien precio y con un gran patio. No pude resistir alquilarla y comenzar una huerta para ver qué tal crece todo por aquí.
I found this nice little house here in Paraguay, at a very good price and with a big yard. I couldn't resist renting it and starting a vegetable garden to see how everything grows around here.
Llevo 4 meses aquí ya, de los cuales 3 fueron muy invernales y ya por fin vamos transición ando a primavera. Si bien experimenté un tanto de frío, no llego a ser tan cruel como mi querido sur de Chile y con todo pude avanzar bastante en la huerta.
I have been here for 4 months now, 3 of which were very wintry and now we are finally transitioning to spring. Although I experienced a bit of cold, it was not as cruel as in my beloved south of Chile and I was able to make a lot of progress in the vegetable garden.
El suelo no es muy bueno, por no decir pésimo, principalmente arcilla negra con arena. Para ayudar con esto me he dedicado principalmente a plantar leguminosas y cubrir el suelo con hojarasca. Tenía una excelente fuente de hojas que recogían en un parque cercano pero creo que asusté a los vecinos al comenzar a traer todas esas bolsas de lo que ellos llaman “basura” y me pidieron que no trajera más.
The soil is not very good, not to say lousy, mainly black clay with sand. To help with this I have been mainly planting legumes and mulching the soil with leaf litter. I had an excellent source of leaves collected from a nearby park but I think I scared the neighbors when I started bringing in all those bags of what they call "trash" and they asked me not to bring in any more.
Comprendo que al no tener conocimiento de la ciencia del suelo piensen así, así que dejé de traer, pero ahora que me he ganado un poco más de su confianza he comenzado lentamente a conseguir un poco más de materia para alimentar el suelo.
I understand that having no knowledge of soil science they think so, so I stopped bringing, but now that I have gained a little more of their trust I have slowly started to get a little more matter to feed the soil.
Si bien el suelo no ayuda y he tenido bastante invasión de las gallinas de mis vecinos - sin hablar de las hormigas cortadoras - el progreso ha sido mucho mas rápido que lo que nunca fue allá en el sur de Chile, especialmente en los meses de invierno en que nada crece. Mi plan es quedarme hasta la temporada de mangos por aquí (pleno verano) y ver qué resultados obtengo hasta entonces.
While the soil does not help and I have had quite a bit of invasion from my neighbors' chickens - not to mention the leaf cutter ants - progress has been much faster than it ever was in southern Chile, especially in the winter months when nothing grows. My plan is to stay until the mango season here (midsummer) and see what results I get until then.
Ha sido grato poder plantar algumas cosas que no crecen en cualquier parte como el maní. Da una gran satisfacción ver brotar algo que en otra zona climática no podías cultivar, especialmente algo que es tan nutritivo.
It has been nice to be able to plant some things that don't grow just anywhere, like peanuts. It gives great satisfaction to see something sprout that in another climate zone you couldn't grow, especially something that is so nutritious.
También es mi primera vez que puedo cultivar garbanzos. Ni idea si su desarrollo hasta el momento es adecuado pues no tengo referencia, pero al menos han brotado muy bien, cosa que nunca antes pude lograr.
It is also my first time that I can grow chickpeas. I have no idea if their development so far is adequate because I have no reference, but at least they have sprouted very well, something I could never achieve before.
También este lugar cuenta con la bendición de estar rodeado de bananeras en abundancia. La gente es humilde, a menudo me invitan una comida o me ofrecen algún tipo de ayuda. En mi tendencia solitaria a veces me suelo aislar mucho pero en general me ofrecen gestos de simpatia sin pedir nada a cambio.
This place is also blessed to be surrounded by banana trees in abundance. The people are humble, often inviting me for a meal or offering me some kind of help. In my solitary tendency I sometimes tend to isolate myself a lot but in general they offer me gestures of sympathy without asking for anything in return.
Espero les haya gustado el tour. Si hay algo que les gustaría saber sobre Paraguay déjenme un comentario. Personalmente nunca oí hablar mucho sobre este país y es muy curioso porque está lleno de particularidades.
