It was supposed to be just another weekend...but ever since last Tuesday, when I picked up a call from my brother @iticocaracas, I knew things were gonna break the mold. He’s got a spot down in a coastal town in Venezuela—real beachy vibes, laid-back setup, and that party energy kinda floating in the air. We’ve hung out there plenty of times before, but this is the first time I’m letting my readers in on this slice of our private life within our little owner’s circle. Didn’t exactly get his green light to write about his “hideout” (that’s what he calls it), but I’m rolling the dice ‘cause it was a sweet move on his part, and it’s the kind of place where the whole fam tends to crash—especially come December. So yeah, my wife and I had our bags packed for Friday, but thanks to a gnarly storm and three blackouts, we hit pause and pushed the trip to Saturday morning.

We were up early Saturday—she got the coffee brewing, made sure our three pets (Mika, Leo, and Kupi) had enough grub and water, and struck a deal with me to take the wheel all the way to La Guaira State, about a two-hour highway cruise from our city. @aventurerasbike isn’t exactly thrilled with my driving style, and honestly, if it helps her chill, I’m more than happy to hand over the keys—call it “intuition” or whatever (if something went sideways, I’d dodge the lectures and she’d be stuck hearing ‘em from me...lol). So yeah, we rolled out around 7 a.m., but for some reason, traffic was a mess that Saturday and it ended up taking us three hours to get there. We just shrugged it off, parked the ride in the building’s lot, and got a warm hug from my sister-in-law as soon as we showed up.

Yesterday was straight-up lights out! Our sister-in-law came in clutch with a full-on breakfast spread: a loaded beef stew with potatoes, eggs, cilantro, and corn arepas—classic Andean Venezuelan grub, the kind that hits like a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth. After we polished off that heavy-hitter of a meal, we sipped some coffee and headed down to the pool area. It’s a real family-friendly setup—tables with shade tents lining the perimeter like outfielders hugging the warning track, plus a bunch of beach loungers for catching rays. Still, my cousin Iván, my brother @iticocaracas, and I decided to start the game early with vodka, orange juice, and a splash of grenadine—our version of batting practice. The ladies (@aventurerasbike and my sister-in-law) knocked back a couple drinks too before diving into the pool. Meanwhile, us guys picked up another teammate for a round of dominoes, since we weren’t ready to hit the water yet. The matches got so tight, it felt like extra innings—we played straight through the afternoon and into the night before finally calling it.

And as long there’s @iticocaracas fired up the coals and my cousin stepped up to the plate, grilling a lineup that was pure All-Star: juicy rump cap, ribs, spicy sausages, plus some yuca and a knockout avocado salad that was straight MVP material. Once we’d cleaned our plates, we headed back up to the apartment with all the gear that helped serve that grand slam of a meal. Then came the curveball—my sister-in-law surprised us with a Red Velvet cake, sweet as a walk-off and lit up with candles marking the score. That was cake number two for the weekend, since @aventurerasbike had already sliced up a pineapple one on Friday. This morning we geared up for the trip home after crushing some empanadas—another clutch hit from my sister-in-law. I took the wheel to Caracas to scoop up a vehicle ID my sister had stashed for @stow01, and guess what? Boom—cake number three. My sister brought it out and we belted out another round of birthday tunes like it was the bottom of the ninth. We made it back to our home field in Aragua by 11 a.m., hearts full and spirits high from all the love this ballplayer got from the fam. That’s a big-league blessing right there. Celebrating it? That’s the only play left.
