Los votantes hablaron... Con un golpe de timón increíble a la tendencia que venía sucediendo en las últimas dos elecciones, el tercera base dominicano Adrián Beltré, el jardinero Todd Helton, el catcher Joe Mauer y el manager Jim Leyland fueron seleccionados en la clase 2024 para el salón de la fama de Cooperstown, NY. Jim fue elegido por el comité de la era del béisbol contemporáneo y los cuatro serán exaltados en una ceremonia a realizarse el 21 de Julio en el Clark Sports Center.
Leyland fue un manager exitoso con una larga trayectoria que lo vio dirigir a los Piratas de Pittsburgh, los Marlins de Florida y a los Tigres de Detroit, equipo con el cual se retiró del béisbol. Su mejor etapa la tuvo con los Tigres de Detroit y fue quien recomendó a los felinos llevarse el contrato de un muchacho novato que él dirigió en Florida, cuando los llevó a la serie mundial y la ganó frente a los Yankees de New York: un tal Miguel Cabrera. Imperturbable como el que más, Jim supo ganarse el respeto de todos los equipos que dirigió.

The voters spoke... In an incredible reversal of the trend of the last two elections, Dominican third baseman Adrian Beltre, outfielder Todd Helton, catcher Joe Mauer and manager Jim Leyland were selected in the 2024 class for the Cooperstown, NY Hall of Fame. Jim was elected by the contemporary baseball era committee and all four will be inducted in a ceremony on July 21 at the Clark Sports Center.
Leyland was a successful manager with a long career that saw him manage the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Florida Marlins and the Detroit Tigers, the team with which he retired from baseball. His best period was with the Detroit Tigers and it was he who recommended the Tigers to take the contract of a young rookie he managed in Florida, when he took them to the World Series and won it against the New York Yankees: a certain Miguel Cabrera. As unflappable as anyone, Jim knew how to earn the respect of all the teams he managed.

Adrián Beltré fue un espectacular tercera base dominicano, respetado por su guante y reverenciado por su bate. Fue uno de esos casos extraños del beisbol, donde el jugador explota en la segunda mitad de su carrera (recuerden al "Big Cat" Andrés Galarraga) y puso los números para ser considerado por los votantes en su primera oportunidad en las boletas. Era un jugador pasional y tenía opiniones muy marcadas sobre como debía entregarse un pelotero a su profesión. Quien lo veía jugar, sabe muy bien que adoraba estar en el diamante.
Todd Helton fue un primera base de los Rockies de Colorado. Un tipo serio que dejaba a su bate hablar por él. Estuvo varios años en la boleta por un caso muy debatido respecto a sus 17 años jugando en Denver: la elevación de la ciudad y el clima enrarecido donde la pelota viaja más por los batazos. Por supuesto, tenía todo a favor porque sus números en la carretera no fueron nada despreciables y al igual que Larry Walker (el único otro Rockie en ser entronizado al salón), no importaba si estaba en Denver o de gira, siempre se las arreglaba para batear.

Adrián Beltré was a spectacular Dominican third baseman, respected for his glove and revered for his bat. He was one of those rare cases in baseball, where a player explodes in the second half of his career (remember the "Big Cat" Andres Galarraga) and put up the numbers to be considered by voters in his first opportunity on the ballot. He was a passionate player and had very strong opinions about how a player should devote himself to his profession. Anyone who watched him play knows very well that he loved being on the diamond.
Todd Helton was a first baseman for the Colorado Rockies. A serious guy who let his bat do the talking. He spent several years on the ballot for a much debated case regarding his 17 years playing in Denver: the city's elevation and rarefied climate where the ball travels more for hits. Of course, he had everything going for him because his numbers on the road were not inconsiderable and like Larry Walker (the only other Rockie to be enthroned to the hall), it didn't matter if he was in Denver or on tour, he always managed to hit.

Por último, Joe Mauer fue un catcher espectacular que jugó toda su carrera con los Mellizos de Minnesota. Es el tercer receptor que logra ser elegido en su primer año (Iván Rodríguez y Johnny Bench son los otros dos) y la razón fue su defensiva y su bate más que respetable. Se tenía dudas sobre si lo elegirían en su primer año, puesto que las lesiones hacia el final de su carrera, le hicieron mudarse a la primera base en sus últimos 5 años de juego. Pero lo que hizo detrás del plato, le ganó el respeto de los votantes quienes le han respondido.
En el camino quedaron varios chicos que intentarán subir su apoyo para las próximas elecciones. Entre ellos están los venezolanos Omar Vizquel, Bobby Abreu y Francisco "El Kid" Rodríguez, quienes conservaron la opción de seguir apareciendo en las papeletas al obtener: 17,7%; 14,8% y 7,8% respectivamente. El catcher y bateador designado Víctor Martínez queda fuera de la boleta al no conseguir el mínimo del 5% necesario para pasar el corte. Nos leemos por allí.

Finally, Joe Mauer was a spectacular catcher who played his entire career with the Minnesota Twins. He is the third catcher to be selected in his first year (Ivan Rodriguez and Johnny Bench are the others) and the reason was his defense and his more than respectable bat. There were doubts as to whether he would be chosen in his first year, since injuries towards the end of his career caused him to move to first base in his last 5 years like player.
