Let’s cut to the chase with a simple question for our readers: Can any Web3 project actually gain traction without spending a dime? You don’t need to be a blockchain wizard to know the answer. Still, in decentralized Web3 communities, everyone’s got a hot take on where and how to allocate funds to squeeze value out of every token. So far, we’re all nodding in agreement, right? Cool. But here’s where things get sticky—agreeing on the “how” is a whole different ballgame. I came across a post on X by @starkerz a couple weeks back, calling out Hive’s debt levels as being way out of sync with what the chain can realistically handle, especially with the token dipping. To paraphrase, he warned that if the current free-spending habits continue unchecked, Hive’s long-term sustainability could be in serious trouble.

On the flip side, the push for spending transparency—especially around @valueplan’s budget execution—sparked a [governance sit-down](https://peakd.com/hiveforum/@hiveforum/hiveforum-kl-roundtable-sun-19-oct-2025-improving-dao-spending-accountability-and-valueplan-transparency) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The goal? To hash out better decision-making processes and lock in clear mechanisms for showing how funds are actually being used. We’re talking KPIs, budget reports, funding criteria, voting procedures, and proposal standards for tapping into the DHF. All of that hit the table at the roundtable, which featured a who’s who of Hive governance (no tags here—trying to keep the spam police off my back): Gandalf, Sorin.Cristescu, Vaultec, LordButterfly, CrimsonClad, Blocktrades, Detlev, Arcange, Stoodkev, RoelandP, Starkerz, Engrave, and Clayboyn. Pretty much the governance all-stars. One key figure was missing, though—Guiltyparties. Not sure if he skipped the trip to Malaysia or had other reasons, but it would’ve been solid to have him there, given his weight in DHF approvals.

By the end of the roundtable, three key takeaways and a roadmap for future action were locked in: a) *Publishing voting criteria for witnesses and stakeholders:* this aims to bring public clarity to why a witness or stakeholder backs—or shoots down—a proposal; b) *Clear thresholds for ValuePlan funding levels:* the idea here is to tie debt or funding tiers to the number of witnesses needed for approval. Basically, the bigger the budget ask, the more votes you need to greenlight it; and c) *New reporting and accountability standards for all DHF-funded projects:* this one’s about tracking ROI—making sure every Hive-backed initiative shows a clear link between investment and actual value delivered.

If you ask us, this was a long-overdue conversation. Why? Because no matter how decentralized a project claims to be, sloppy spending can wreck its long-term sustainability. This very writer has tapped into the DHF before and always wondered about the level of oversight in budget execution. Why? As a former entrepreneur, I never dodged a single audit—every expense went through accounting, and as partners, we course-corrected any overages in real time. That’s just how it works. In any serious organization, financial control is non-negotiable. Decentralization should never be confused with chaos. And that’s part of the grind when you’re part of a collective—getting everyone aligned on what keeps the project viable. From this corner of the Web3 blogosphere, we salute the governance crew for stepping up and setting caps on unchecked spending. But always with the awareness that smart investment is what makes the right kind of noise in this space.
