El campeonato invernal de la liga venezolana de béisbol profesional (LVBP), entra a su cuarta semana a partir de hoy. Hay varias certezas que se han tejido en éstas tres semanas de recorrido: la primera, los Tigres de Aragua vienen con todo y se encuentran varios pasos adelante en comparación con el resto de los equipos de la liga, al ostentar balance de 11 ganados y 5 perdidos, además de poseer la punta del campeonato por dos juegos de ventaja de sus más inmediatos perseguidores. De seguidas, se encuentran en la tabla un grupo compacto de equipos, a quienes les separan solo dos juegos entre el segundo y el séptimo lugar, lo que da una visión completa sobre lo competitiva de la zafra actual. Y en el sótano, se encuentra el equipo con más seguidores del país: Navegantes del Magallanes, con balance de 5 ganados y 10 perdidos, separados del grupo anterior por 1,5 juegos detrás (algo doloroso, considerando la popularidad de éste).

Winter ball in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) hits week four today, and after three weeks of action, a few things are crystal clear: first off, the Tigres de Aragua are straight-up dealing—they’re ahead of the pack with an 11–5 record and sitting pretty atop the standings with a two-game cushion over the chasing crew. Right behind them, it’s a logjam from second to seventh, just two games separating the bunch, making this season a dogfight from top to middle. Down in the cellar, though, it’s a tough pill to swallow for the country’s most beloved squad—Magallanes is dragging with a 5–10 mark, 1.5 games off the pace from the rest of the mid-pack, and that sting hits harder when you’ve got the biggest fanbase in the land.

Una de las cuestiones ausentes del campeonato ha sido el pitcheo de calidad. Salvo los Tigres de Aragua, el resto de los equipos parecen tener dificultades extremas con los lanzadores abridores. Para dar un ejemplo de esto, anoche todos los ganadores de encuentros de la jornada anotaron más de 10 carreras (Tiburones 17-6 Tigres, Bravos 10-3 Navegantes, Cardenales 11-4 Caribes y Leones 16-3 Águilas), y eso podría interpretarse como una ofensiva devastadora de parte de los ganadores, cuando en realidad es una falta increíble de pitcheo abridor (tampoco están muy bien los equipos con el relevo, pero sin abridores de calidad, un campeonato será una pesadilla). Quizás ésto podría atribuirse al comienzo dubitativo que históricamente ha tenido la liga, pero los peloteros que juegan acá, ya vienen de jugar en otras ligas por lo que no puede atribuirse al "estar fríos" (más aún cuando tuvieron una pretemporada).

One thing missing from this year’s LVBP campaign is quality pitching—plain and simple. Outside of the Tigres de Aragua, most squads are getting lit up early, with starters struggling to even get through the lineup once. Case in point: last night’s scoreboard looked like a home run derby gone wild—Tiburones 17-6 over Tigres, Bravos 10-3 over Magallanes, Cardenales 11-4 over Caribes, and Leones 16-3 over Águilas. Sure, you could say the bats were on fire, but truth is, the starters got shelled and the bullpens didn’t do much mopping either. Without solid arms to open games, this season’s gonna feel like a long grind. Maybe it’s just the usual slow start the league’s known for, but these guys aren’t coming in cold—they’ve been playing elsewhere and had a full preseason, so that excuse doesn’t hold water.

Tomemos como ejemplo el partido ganado ayer por los Leones del Caracas, quienes recibieron en el estadio metropolitano Simón Bolívar (demasiado grande para la cantidad de gente que asistió), a las Águilas del Zulia. Los visitantes se fueron adelante en el propio primer episodio con una carrera, la cual fue ripostada en el cierre del mismo con cuatro carreras de los felinos. Con un marcador 4-1, ya se perfilaba como el juego explotaría en cualquier momento. Una carrera más en el cierre del segundo y dos en la apertura del tercero, ponía las cosas 5-3 en favor del Caracas. Cuando llegó el cierre del tercer episodio, el juego entró en el congelador con la bicoca de 9 carreras más, cortesía de cuatro boletos, un par de hits y un grand slam de Oswaldo Arcia. Al abridor le anotaron 5 carreras y a los dos siguientes relevistas les hicieron 9. 14 a 3 en el cierre del tercero y a dormir el resto del partido.

Take last night’s blowout win by Leones del Caracas as a prime example. They hosted Águilas del Zulia at the cavernous Simón Bolívar ballpark—way too much real estate for the crowd that showed up. Zulia scratched one in the top of the first, but Caracas came out swinging in the bottom half, dropping a four-spot to flip the script. At 4–1, you could feel the game was about to pop. Caracas tacked on another in the second, Zulia answered with two in the top of the third, making it 5–3. Then came the bottom of the third, and the wheels came off—nine runs poured in off four walks, a couple knocks, and a grand slam courtesy of Oswaldo Arcia. The starter got tagged for five, and the next two arms gave up nine more. 14–3 after three, and the rest was just playing out the clock.

Por supuesto, no podemos aspirar a que un campeonato local tenga el nivel de las grandes ligas pero ¿Qué creen sintieron los aficionados de las Águilas del Zulia presentes en el recinto? ¿Estafa? Muchos zulianos se establecieron en Caracas, dada la "migración interna" azuzada por los apagones en aquel territorio tan castigado y van al metropolitano para ¿ver al equipo de sus amores ser vapuleado de ese modo? Sí, es béisbol invernal, pero no deja de ser caro el boleto para ir al moderno estadio y los aficionados esperan valor por lo que invierten. Nosotros mismos hemos dejado de seguir éste campeonato al ver que ofrecen más razones para quedarse dormido en las butacas, que para invertir en un boleto, la aventura del traslado al estadio y las chucherías más las bebidas caras dentro del coso. Aún así, intentaremos pensar positivo y le daremos una oportunidad a nuestro béisbol.

Sure, nobody’s expecting winter ball to match the big leagues, but what do you think Águilas fans felt sitting through that beatdown? Ripped off? A lot of Zulians now call Caracas home thanks to the rolling blackouts back west, and they show up at the Metropolitano hoping to see their squad put up a fight—not get steamrolled. Yeah, it’s off-season ball, but tickets to that shiny new stadium ain’t cheap, and fans want bang for their buck. Truth is, we’ve stopped following the league ourselves—it’s been more snooze-fest than showtime, and between the ticket price, the trek to the park, and the overpriced snacks and drinks, it’s hard to justify the trip. Still, we’ll try to stay optimistic and give our baseball one more shot.
