Faltan apenas seis semanas para que la actual temporada de la MLB culmine. Y derivado a ello, prometí hacer una especie de reporte semanal de los cambios en la clasificación de cara a los play-off. Aquí vamos. Comenzamos con la división oeste de la liga Nacional donde los Dodgers han conseguido "domar" a los calientes Padres de San Diego en una serie directa terminada en el fin de semana recién finalizado. Los esquivadores barrieron y con ello pusieron orden en la división, dado que los religiosos les habían alcanzado y se pusieron a un triunfo por encima, perdiendo momentáneamente la azotea. Ayer ambos equipos perdieron y no se modificó la ventaja de dos juegos de Los Ángeles. Resta una serie entre ambos en San Diego y quizás ese sea la que defina quien pasa y quien jugará el comodín. El restos de los equipos de la división están demasiado lejos para aspirar a algo. Pronóstico: aunque nos duela, los Dodgers deberían prevalecer.

Out West in the NL, the Dodgers just wrangled the red-hot Padres in a head-to-head weekend showdown, sweeping the Friars clean and reestablishing order in the division. San Diego had clawed their way to the top, even nudging ahead by a game, but L.A. slammed the door and reclaimed the penthouse. Both squads took an L yesterday, so the Dodgers’ two-game cushion stays put. One more series between these two in San Diego looms large—it might be the decider between punching a ticket or settling for the Wild Card grind. The rest of the division? Too far back to make noise. Forecast: painful as it is, the Boys in Blue look built to hold serve.

En la central del viejo circuito, conseguimos reinando a los Cerveceros de Milwaukee sin despeinarse. Con balance de 22 ganados y 5 perdidos en sus últimos 27 juegos, será difícil que los Cachorros logren dar alcance, porque están a 9 juegos en el segundo lugar. Los oseznos lideran el primer comodín por cuatro juegos de ventaja y Cincinnati está a un solo juego del tercer comodín. Los demás equipos no cuentan. Pronóstico: Cerveceros se coronan, Cachorros queda con el comodín y Cincinnati está urgido de una buena racha de ganados (ayer ganaron). Y en el este de la Nacional, Filadelfia se ha desprendido de los Mets y lideran por 5.5 juegos la división. Éstos últimos poseen el tercer comodín de la liga y tendrán que cuidarse de los Rojos, quienes son los únicos que podrían disputarle el puesto. Pronóstico: Filadelfia se lleva la división y los Mets están pasando un mal momento que podría costarle ese tercer comodín de manos de Cincinnati.

The Baby Bears do hold the top Wild Card slot with a four-game cushion, while Cincy’s just one game shy of snagging the third ticket. Everyone else? Playing out the string. Forecast: Brewers pop the champagne, Cubs lock down the Wild Card, and the Reds need to string together some dubs (they got one yesterday) to stay in the hunt. Over in the NL East, Philly’s peeled away from the Mets and now sits 5.5 games clear atop the division. The Amazins still cling to the third Wild Card, but they better keep an eye on the Reds, the only squad close enough to swipe it. Prediction: Phillies take the crown, and the Mets’ skid could open the door for Cincy to crash the October party.

En el oeste del nuevo circuito, La pelea entre los Astros de Houston y los Marineros de Seattle es a muerte. Ambos equipos han jugado para balance de 5 ganados y 5 perdidos en sus últimos 10 juegos y la brecha señala 1.5 juegos a favor de los siderales en la azotea. El pronóstico acá se nos hace harto difícil, porque los nautas lograron armarse hasta los dientes antes de la fecha límite y los de la ciudad espacial tienen un hospital en el dugout. El resto de los equipos no van al baile. En el centro de la Americana, los Tigres de Detroit han tomado una ventaja considerable, luego de acabar con la mala racha tenida y jugar para balance 7-3 en sus últimos 10 partidos. Al resto de ésta división se le hará cuesta arriba acceder a los comodines (casos Cleveland y Royals) o pasar a los play-off (casos Mellizos de Minnesota y Medias Blancas de Chicago). Nuestro pronóstico acá es sencillo: Tigres pasan a play-off sin despeinarse. Si alguno otro pasa, será como comodín y lo veo bien difícil.

In the AL Central, the Detroit Tigers have clawed their way into a comfy lead after snapping their slump and going 7–3 in their last 10. The rest of the division’s got a steep hill to climb—Cleveland and KC are long shots for a Wild Card, and the Twins and White Sox are playoff pipe dreams. Forecast’s a no-brainer: Tigers cruise into October, and if anyone else sneaks in, it’ll be through the Wild Card back door—and that’s looking like a long shot.

Por último, la división este del nuevo circuito es una incógnita más que despejada hacia estos días, dada la racha que puso a los Azulejos de Toronto al mando de la azotea hace un par de semanas. Lideran por 5 juegos de ventaja sobre sus más inmediatos seguidores: los Yankees de Nueva York y los Medias Rojas de Boston. Los Rays de Tampa y los Orioles de Baltimore ya no cuentan para nada, salvo un milagro que le suceda a las rayas de la bahía. Los azulejos podrían ceder terreno dado que su más insigne jugador -Vladimir Guerrero Jr.- acaba de lesionarse por una estirada en primera base de antología. Sí, sacó el out, pero ¿A qué costo? Habrá se hacer seguimiento a su evolución, aunque por el momento ofensivo que viven los pajarracos, hace que la preocupación sea menor. El pronóstico pareciera fácil aquí, pero no es así. Primero por la lesión de Vlad, segundo porque las series de estas últimas semanas encontrarán varios enfrentamientos directos que podrían definir todo y ya sabemos el historial de ésta división tan peleada siempre. Amanecerá y veremos.
