Hoy nos referiremos a la decisión de los Cachorros de Chicago, de elevar a Samuel "Sammy" Sosa al salón de la fama de su equipo. Para quienes no conocen al personaje, es un ex-pelotero estrella de ese equipo, quien se enfrascó en una cerrada lucha por el récord de jonrones con Mark McGwire en 1998. Ganada por éste último tal duelo, a Sosa solo le quedó relamerse las heridas cuando llegó detrás dcl hombre de los Cardenales de San Luis. McGwire terminó con 70 cuadrangulares y Sosa finalizó bateando 66. Ambos borraron el registro de Roger Maris establecido hasta esa temporada de 61 jonrones ¿Por qué dar contexto a lo logrado por "Sammy"? Porque fue un guarismo manchado por la sombra de los esteroides anabólicos. Una manera de "hacer" trampa en el deporte, que ya se había institucionalizado y que la hipocresía había validado.

Por el lado contrario, están los "puristas" del deporte, quienes desean toda ventaja creada por el hombre, sea borrada de la práctica deportiva con el fin de competir con "cuerpos verdaderos y honestos" (si es que eso existe, dada la naturaleza humana de descubrir formas de hacer trampa).

Si el béisbol hubiera querido que hombre inflados en esteroides estuvieran en el salón de la fama del béisbol, hace rato habría entronizado a quienes fueron pioneros en el uso de tales ventajas. Lo que nos molesta del asunto, es que suban a alguien a nivel inmortal dentro de un equipo, cuando los valores de juego descontaminado están más cuestionados que nunca. Sí, pertenezco románticamente a aquella vieja guardia quien desea el juego limpio. Ya es bastante difícil escalar por las ligas menores para hacer el grado en Grandes Ligas ¿También debo dañar mi cuerpo para destacar? ¿Las grandes ligas se empezarán a comportarse tal como lo hace la NFL, a quien no les importa el cerebro de los jugadores de fútbol americano muera con cada choque de cabezas? Quiero un juego limpio. Desde ésta tribuna lo demando ¿Qué piensa usted, amado lector? Los leo.

We’re not here to play judge and jury. If baseball had really wanted to crown the steroid-loaded sluggers, it would've already put the OGs of the juice era in Cooperstown without blinking. What rubs us the wrong way is seeing a guy get immortalized by his team while the whole idea of fair play is hanging by a thread.
