Cuando el torpedero venezolano de los Guardianes de Cleveland Brayan Rocchio fue bajado a ligas menores el 12 de Mayo pasado, concretamente a la sucursal de Columbus clase Triple "A", jamás imaginó el camino que le deparaba el destino. Como campocorto titular del equipo grande, su temporada hasta ese momento había dejado mucho que desear y los Guardianes no tuvieron más remedio que actuar para intentar re-encaminar su carrera. Luego de ajustar el swing y despertar el bate en las menores, el equipo de la ciudad del rock lo subió nuevamente el primero de Julio, pero se haría segunda base para bajarle presión y nombraron como titular del campocorto al otro criollo en el roster Gabriel Arias. Llegado el 8 de Julio, la situación en el dugout no había mejorado mucho. De hecho, se pensaba el equipo sería vendedor en la fecha límite de cambios, al estar sumergidos 15 juegos y medio detrás del líder de la división. After tweaking his swing and heating up at the plate in the minors, the Rock and Roll City squad called him back up on July 1—but this time, they slid him over to second base to ease the pressure, handing the shortstop reins to fellow Venezuelan Gabriel Arias. By July 8, things hadn’t turned around much for the team. In fact, Cleveland looked like a potential seller at the trade deadline, buried 15 and a half games behind the division leader. The outlook for the rest of the season was anything but bright.

¿Y los Rojos de Cincinnati? Otro caso increíble de una zafra histórica, pero con menos "punch" que la leyenda de los chicos de Cleveland. @hosgug debe estar de plácemes y celebrando. No puede ser de otro modo. While the Guardians locked up the division crown, the Reds were in a win-or-go-home spot yesterday, needing a W to control their own fate and snag the third Wild Card in the National League—the final ticket to October baseball. They couldn’t pull it off, falling to the team with the best record in the Majors: the Milwaukee Brewers. But baseball’s magic has a way of rewarding heart, and the Reds poured plenty of it into their comeback push. Turns out the craft beer capital came through. Two Ohio squads in the postseason? You bet. Thanks to the Florida Marlins sweeping the New York Mets at LoanDepot Park, Elly De La Cruz is headed to his first taste of playoff ball.

It’s been a privilege writing for you through what turned out to be a season for the ages. The postseason kicks off tomorrow with some of the hottest matchups we’ve seen in recent memory: Cleveland hosts their longtime nemesis Detroit at Progressive Field; San Diego heads to Chicago where the Cubs will defend home turf; Cincinnati squares off against the Dodgers in L.A.; and—who would’ve thought—Boston has to face the Yankees in the Bronx. My sentimental picks? Detroit, San Diego, Cincinnati, and Boston. But if I’m being objective? Cleveland, San Diego, Dodgers, and Yankees. Who’s sitting tight waiting for the Wild Card dust to settle? Seattle’s got eyes on the Detroit–Cleveland winner; Philly’s watching the outcome between Cincinnati and the Dodgers; Milwaukee’s holding for whoever comes out of San Diego vs. Chicago; and the Blue Jays are licking their chops for the fallout between Boston and New York.
