Ayer, en el Nationals Park de la ciudad de Washington, el diamante se engalanó para recibir a dos managers nacidos en la patria de Bolívar, quienes protagonizaban el primer juego donde dos cabezas de equipo connacionales se enfrentaban en un desafío del Big Show. Los Nacionales recibieron a los Mets de Nueva York, posibilitando el hito, dado que Miguel Cairo quedó frente al equipo capitalino de manera interina, cuando el manager titular fue despedido a mediados de Julio. Carlos Mendoza está en los controles de los metropolitanos desde que arrancó la temporada, con resultados mixtos pero ubicados en la segunda posición de su división y con un comodín en sus manos.

¿Por qué no dejar pasar por debajo de la mesa, éste hito de la historia de la MLB? Digamos que hasta no hace mucho (últimas dos décadas del siglo pasado), Venezuela era reconocida como lugar donde nacían los grandes shortstops, pero eso fue cambiando con el transitar al nuevo centenario. De pronto y con la ayuda de escuelas de béisbol patrocinadas por equipos de grandes ligas, el talento criollo se convirtió en producto de exportación. Y así fue como estallaron otras posiciones del cuadro e, incluso, el pitcheo. De allí en adelante, la lógica impone que al colgar los spikes, esos atletas pasen a ser coaches enseñando a los más jóvenes. Por supuesto, muchos de ellos tienen que volver a las menores a comenzar de "0", porque es la única manera que se tiene de probar que se sabe dirigir un equipo. Así las cosas, en ese papel tienen que demostrar ser ganadores y solo así, subirán por el sistema de liga menor hasta las mayores. Felicitaciones a "Miggy" y a Carlos..!

Why let this milestone slide under the radar when it’s a straight-up gem in MLB’s storybook? Back in the day—say, the last couple decades of the 20th century—Venezuela was the go-to pipeline for slick-fielding shortstops, but once the calendar flipped to the new century, the game started shifting. With big league clubs backing local baseball academies, the homegrown talent turned into prime export material. Next thing you know, Venezuelan ballplayers were popping up all over the diamond—and even toeing the rubber. Naturally, when those guys hang up their spikes, the next inning is coaching, passing down the know-how to the rookies. But here’s the rub: most of ’em gotta grind it out in the minors, starting from scratch to prove they’ve got the chops to run a squad. Only by stacking W’s down there can they punch their ticket to The Show. Hats off to Miggy and Carlos—two guys who’ve earned their shot and are making history in the dugout.

Los Tigres de Detroit siguen siendo propietarios del segundo mejor balance de ganados y perdidos de todas las mayores. Y cuando usted enfrenta un equipo como los Astros de Houston en una serie comenzada ayer en casa, tiene que poner mucho de su parte para salir airoso. Y en montículo se encontraban los dos mejores abridores de cada equipo ¿Imaginan el resultado? Pues sí, duelo de pitcheo donde los lanzadores tuvieron el protagonismo. Solo 5 imparables de parte de los siderales y 4 protagonizados por los felinos, fueron todas las libertades permitidas por abridores y relevistas. Y como suele ser normal en tales circunstancias, el juego terminó con la mínima diferencia de carreras entre ambos equipos y en extra-inning, a favor de los Tigres. El segunda base venezolano Gleyber Torres, llegado desde los Yankees antes de la fecha límite de cambios, sacó un boleto con las bases llenas para dejar en el terreno a los Astros. Fin de la historia y Detroit demostrando que se encuentra para cosas grandes en los play-off.

The Detroit Tigers are still rocking the second-best win-loss record in all of the Bigs, and when you kick off a home series against a heavyweight like the Houston Astros, you better bring your A-game. Last night’s opener was a straight-up pitchers’ duel, with each squad sending their ace to the bump—so yeah, you guessed it, a low-scoring chess match from the first pitch. The ‘Stros managed just five knocks, the Cats scraped together four, and that was all she wrote in terms of offense. Starters and bullpen arms were dealing, painting corners and keeping hitters guessing. As is usually the case in these tightrope affairs, it came down to a razor-thin margin in extras. Otra serie interesante comenzada ayer, ha sido la que protagonizan los Marineros de Seattle, quienes visitan el Citizens Bank Park de los Filis de Filadelfia. Acá la receta de abridores fue diferente, con Seattle enviando al único de ellos quien ha sido inconsistente ésta temporada Bryce Miller, versus el abridor estrella inesperado Cristopher Sánchez (quien ha protagonizado un 1-2 con Zack Wheeler). Con un resultado más abierto -vista la calidad de ambas ofensivas- ambos equipos coleccionaron 7 imparables. Solo que los Filis fueron -como siempre- más productivos con sus batazos, terminando el juego a su favor 6-4 por un jonrón de su catcher estelar J.T. Realmuto en el cierre del octavo productor de dos. Justamente antes, en la apertura del séptimo, Eugenio Suárez había empatado las acciones con un soberbio doble de dos carreras, para entregar esperanzas de un juego que venían perdiendo 4-2, pero tal como definimos no fue suficiente. Seattle se quedó a 1,5 juegos de los Astros y Filadelfia sigue encabezando su división sin despeinarse. Cosas veredes Sancho, decía el Quijote.

Another juicy series kicked off yesterday with the Seattle Mariners rolling into Citizens Bank Park to lock horns with the Phillies. This time, the starting recipe was a little off-script—Seattle handed the ball to Bryce Miller, who’s been riding the inconsistency train all season, while Philly countered with their surprise ace Cristopher Sánchez, who’s been throwing darts alongside Zack Wheeler in a sneaky-good 1-2 punch. With both lineups packing heat, the scoreboard lit up a bit more than your typical pitchers’ duel—each squad racked up seven knocks, but the Phils, true to form, made theirs count. They broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth when their stud backstop J.T. Realmuto launched a two-run moonshot that put the game on ice. Just an inning earlier, Eugenio Suárez had sparked life into the M’s with a clutch two-run double to knot things up, flipping the momentum after trailing 4-2. But that rally fizzled, and Seattle came up short by a couple of outs. They’re now 1.5 games back of the Astros, while Philly keeps cruising atop their division like it’s a Sunday stroll. As the old knight said: “Stranger things you shall see, Sancho.”
