A Calm Retreat at Veere, Zeeland | Netherlands

Veere's charming port, old buildings, and cobblestone streets make one feel nostalgic.

Nestled along the shores of Lake Veere in the southwest of the Netherlands, the province of Zeeland stands out as a city bursting with natural beauty, rich history, and a wealth of attractions.

Unlike traveling to the hustle and bustle of the city, this destination is ideal for people who love nature and the sea.

Many yachts, sailboats, speedboats, and motorboats duck here because the location is one of the most popular ports.

Compared to the urban side of the Netherlands,I noticed that the people here are friendlier, open, and social. I appreciate the kindness and welcoming atmosphere, which contribute to a safe and pleasant neighborhood.

Although not so many shopping centers around when it comes to clothing store or high-end brands or boutique, however, you'll gonna encounter nature that I took from different times and days. The architecture is also unique giving off a vintage ambiance.

Additionally, there are areas for hiking, cycling, boating, and having a nice sunbathing encounter on one of the lovely terraces in the vicinity is rewarding.

You'll discover numerous eateries, perfect for romantic dates and getaways, and of course, good quality snack bars too to satisfy your cravings that fits your budget.

Sharing you my favorite highlights around Veere a few steps away.

Veere Port

One of the most wonderful parts of sightseeing when you are at the Veere Port is the varieties of yachts that amaze you from the old-fashioned to modern ones.

Three binoculars stand there, for a price of 2 euros to see attractions from afar. I tried this one time and didn't see anything special at all.

It is satisfying to see the sailboat though, catch it on a good weather and your day turns out magnificent.

Although windmills may be found all over the Netherlands, each area has its own distinctive features and designs.

Learning about windmills is fascinating:

You may wonder why the Netherlands is named the Low Lands, and why windmills play a significant part in its history, culture, and purposes.

  • Historical Significance:

More than thousands of windmills are found around the Netherlands, some of which date back to the 14th century. They play a vital role in the nation's water drainage and in managing the low-lying landscape.

  • Functions

Windmills were used for sawing wood, grinding grain, and even making oil, among other things. Every kind of windmill was made to do a certain job.

De Koe in Veere is a historic corn mill. Currently, this is out of operation and not open for visitors.

  • Iconic Impressions
The traditional Dutch windmill is distinguished by its thatched roof and vibrant colors.

Molen de Kat in Uitgeest, operates as a Polder Mill, specifically made to pump out excess water to regulate the water levels in polders (canals, seas, rivers, lakes)to maintain dry land.

Water must be regularly pumped out to keep them dry and useable, particularly during high tides or heavy rainfall, in order to avoid flooding

This photo is captured at Zaanse Schaans, soon I will be sharing more about my trip and experience as this is one of the tourist highlight you shouldn't miss in the Netherlands on my next post, particularly the Zaanse surroundings. 😊

  • Wind Power

It is interesting to know that wind turbines generate electricity, making modern windmills a major contributor to renewable energy.

  • Water Management Innovation

A clever system is that the windmills played a crucial role in a comprehensive water management plan featuring canals, dikes, and modern pumping stations. This innovative system allowed the Dutch to control water flow effectively and reduce the risk of flooding.

Even if you are a local, you would surely adore capturing the scenery and uniqueness of windmills all throughout the Netherlands simply because it is pleasant. I'm in love😍

De Grote Kerk

From a distance, the massive church of Veere can be seen as a shadow on the horizon. This church was first built as a late Gothic Basilica in the shape of a cross.

Stadhuis van Veere

Walking through the charming streets of Veere fills me with wonder at the amazing buildings around me. The detailed designs of the medieval structures provide a beautiful background that shows the town's rich history.

Among these architectural gems is the "Stadhuis," or "City Hall" in English.

This impressive building not only serves as a picturesque wedding venue, with its elegant facade setting the perfect scene for couples, but it also partially operates as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the area's highlights.

As you walk straight ahead, you will find Markstraat, also called Market Square. The square is surrounded by old merchant houses. Many of these homes are well-preserved or have been renovated to show the town's rich trading history.

Today, many of these charming houses have been beautifully converted into delightful cafes, boutique shops, or inviting private residences. I truly appreciate the uplifting atmosphere that makes this the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy.

Other than being a travel junkie, I am a foodie too. 😊

Now here's my mussel craving that is all for me. Fresh from the sea 💃Yayyy!🥰

Restaurant In Den Struyskelder had a great portion of food, I had a whole pan of mussels including fries and salad. Paid almost €40 for this and it's worth it!

This restaurant is always buzzy, and for good reason! The food is not only delicious but also great value for your money. You have to give it a try!

Chicken sate is also lekker (delicious)
