Hello, dear friends of Jewelry, I really appreciate the invitation to participate in this wonderful contest. I remember that going back to school was always exciting for me, especially when my parents bought my school supplies. So, I think this contest is wonderful to remember those times that now, as a parent, I have to experience differently. I made an open book. Books are the most important tool when we return to school because through them we learn. I recommend an essay written by Jorge Luis Borges entitled "The Book." Through it, you will understand why this friend is so important. You will be surprised and will like it, since as a Literature teacher, I am always recommending books and essays. Without further ado, I will briefly explain how I made this wonderful book. Let's begin!
Hola queridos amigos de Jewelry, agradezo mucho la invitación para participar en este lindo concurso, recuerdo que el regreso a clase siempre era emocionante para mi, especialmente cuando mis padres compraban mis útiles escolares, así que pienso que este concurso es maravilloso para recordar aquellas épocas que ahora como padre me toca vivir de manera diferente. He realizado un libro abierto, el libro es el instrumento más importante cuando volvemos a clases porque a través de ellos aprendemos el conocimiento. Les recomiendo un ensayo escrito por Jorge Luis Borges titulado "El Libro" a través de esas entenderán por que este amigo es tan importante, se sorprenderán y les gustará, ya que como profesor de Literatura siempre ando recomendando libros y ensayos. Sin más que agregar, explicaré brevemente como hice este maravilloso libro, comencemos!

I cut a piece of reddish wood. I went to the woodworker's shop and found some wood in this color. The piece measures 32 millimeters, which I divide in half with a pencil line, which would be the half of the book. Then, to make the edges, I draw a template on cardboard. I do this so that it looks better and the cut comes out the way I want it. I place the template over the edges of the wood and mark with the pencil.
Corté un trozo de madera rojiza, fui a buscar madera en las carpinterías y pude encontrar de este color. La pieza mide 32 milímetros, la cual divido por la mitad con una línea dibujada con un lápiz, que sería la mitad del libro. Luego para hacer los bordes dibujo en cartón una plantilla, esto lo hago para que me quede mejor y el corte salga como yo lo deseo, coloco la plantilla sobre los bordes de la madera y marco con el lápiz.

The starting point for shaping the book is the top, which would be the pages since it's open. So, the first step is to carve a line, so I use this knife with a "V"-shaped tip as the most suitable tool for this movement. After that, I choose one of the sides, either the left or the right, and begin cutting to shape the wood, using the edge traces I made with the cardboard template as a pattern.
El punto de partida para comenzar a darle forma al libro es la parte superior, lo que vendría siendo las páginas ya que se encuentra abierto. De manera que lo primero es tallar una línea, así que utilizo esta cuchilla que tiene la punta en forma de "V" como la herramienta más idónea para hacer este movimiento. Luego de eso eligo una de las caras ya sea la izquierd ay la derecha y comienzo a cortar para darle forma a la mader ausando como patrón el trazo de los bordes que hice con la plantilla de cartón.

I cut little by little, as I realized this wood isn't that easy; it's a bit brittle if cut from the wrong side. So, once I find the exact spot where the cut works, I can't change the direction the knife blade goes. To make the curve like the book leaves, I switch to one of the oval-tipped blades, cutting the wood all the way to the bottom edge and out to the sides. Then, to get a general overview of the cut, I begin to polish what I've carved so far with sandpaper.
Voy cortando poco a poco, ya que me di cuenta que esta madera no es tan facil, es un poco quebradiza si se corta del lado incorrecto, así que al encontrar el punto exacto por donde el corte se pueda hacer bien, no puedo cambiar la dirección en la que va la hoja de la navaja. Para luego hacer la curva de las hojas del libro cambio hacia una de las cuchillas con la punta ovalada, así voy cortando la madera hasta el borde inferior y hacia los lados. Después para tener una visión general del corte, con una lija comienzo a pulir lo que hasta ahora he tallado.

After that, seeing that the process I'd followed so far was going well, I moved on to the other edge, applying each of the previous steps. After finishing shaping it, I double-checked that they were the same size and height. Seeing that everything was fine, I began cleaning and polishing the entire piece with sandpaper.
Luego de eso, al ver que el proceso que hasta ahora he realizado iba saliendo bien, pasé entonces hacia el otro borde, así que aplicando cada uno de los pasos anteriores. Luego de haber terminado de darle forma reviso muy bien que hayan quedado de la misma medida y estatura, al ver que todo estaba bien comencé a limpiar y pulir toda la pieza con una lija.

It's not just the front of the book that's being carved, but also the part that isn't always visible. Here, we follow the same process as before, with the slight difference that the curve is made on the opposite side. Here, you can see how I use a slightly smaller blade, but one with an oval tip, to perform this step.
No solo es tallar la parte frontal del libro, sino la parte que no está visible todo el tiempo, aquí hacemos el mismo proceso que hemos seguido anteriormente, con la pequeña diferencia de que la curva se hace del lado contrario. Aquí puedne evr como utilizo una cuchilla un poco más pequeña pero que tiene la puntra en forma ovalada también para realizar este paso.

Now, another very important detail that I really liked: I made some small cuts on the side edges. This is where you're supposed to be able to see the pages stacked on top of each other. So, with small cuts, I try to create that part so that it's not just the shape of the book, but also more detailed. Life's greatest gifts are hidden in the small details.
Ahora otro detalle muy importante y que me gustó mucho, hice unos pequeños cortes en los bordes laterales, en esta parte se supone que se pueden ver las hojas unas encima de otra, así que con pequeños cortes trato de hacer esa parte, para que no solo sea la forma del libro, sino que tenga más detallas. En los pequeños detalles se esconden los mejores regalos de la vida.

A ring is placed at the top to insert the necklace. Finally, the sealing varnish is applied. This makes the wood turn a slightly more intense and beautiful red color. The book is now complete.
En la parte superior se coloca una argolla para introducir el collar, por último toca el barniz sellador, este hace que la madera se torne de un color rojo un poco más intenso y hermoso. De esta manera ha quedado finalizado el libro.

This is how the finished Carved Book piece looks. I had a lot of fun making it. I wanted to do some writing on it, so I tried it on a different wood, and it wasn't a good idea, so I just left it like that. Jorge Luis Borges, in the essay I mentioned at the beginning, said: "Of the almost infinite instruments that are the work of man, the most singular is the book. The sword or the plow are an extension of the hand; the telescope or the mirror, of our eyes. The book, on the other hand, is an enduring extension of the imagination and memory, that is, of the entire past." One of the lines I like the most, because when I think about it carefully, it's like this: the book is an extension of our imagination. I want to invite @dayadam @ibarra95 and @virgilio07 to participate in this contest. I know there's little time left, but their amazing skills know no limits. For now, I say goodbye and am grateful for the opportunity to participate.
Así ha quedado finalizado la pieza de un Libro Tallado, me divertí mucho haciéndolo, quise hacerle algunas escrituras, así que probé en otra madera, y no fue buena idea, así que solo la dejé así. Jorge Luis Borges, en el ensayo que les comenté al inicio dijo que: "De los casi infinitos instrumentos que son obra del hombre, el más singular es el libro. La espada o el arado son una extensión de la mano; el telescopio o el espejo, de nuestros ojos. El libro, en cambio, es una extensión perdurable de la imaginación y de la memoria, es decir, de todo el pasado". Una de las líneas que más me gusta, porque cuando lo pienso detenidamente es así, el libro es una extensión de nuestra imaginación. Quiero invitar a este concurso a @dayadam @ibarra95 y @virgilio07 para que participen, se que qued apoco tiempo, pero sus habilidades asombrosas no conocen límites. Por ahora me despido y agradezco la oportunidad de participar.
