Hello dear friends of Hive Diy, I hope you are all doing well, enjoying good health, well-being, and creativity. This week I watched the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody and was deeply impressed. I hadn't had the chance to see it since I thought it didn't catch my attention, and it didn't have any renowned actors in it, but I gave it a chance and was left speechless. Rami Malek's performance, who plays Freddie Mercury, was undoubtedly a great performance; now I see why he won the Oscar. So, with the film as inspiration, I decided to draw Freddie Mercury in black and white, with his face shown in the video of the same name as the film, his most legendary song and one of the best in rock history. I've also made a short video with part of the creation process that you can enjoy by simply playing it. I'll leave you with a very brief explanation of how the process was. I hope you like it.
Hola queridos amigos de Hive Diy, espero que se encuentren muy bien, con mucha salud, bienestar y mucha creatividad. Esta semana estuve viendo la película Bohemian Rhapsody del año 2018 y quedé profundamente impresionado, no había tenido oportunidad de verla ya que pensé que no me llamaba la atención, además no tenía actores de renombre, pero le di una oportunidad y quedé sin palabras. La actuación de Rami Malek, quien interpreta a Freddie Mercury sin duda fue un gran trabajo, ahora veo por qué le dieron el Oscar. Así que con la película como inspiración me decidí a dibujar a Freddie Mercury en blanco y negro, con su rostro mostrado en el video que lleva el mismo nombre de la película, su canción más legendaria y una de las mejores en la historia del rock. También he realizado un video corto con parte del proceso de creación que pueden disfrutar con solo reproducir, los dejo con una explicación muy breve de como fue el proceso, espero que les guste.

This time, the background is black, meaning black cardboard, and for coloring, I use a white pencil. I like to squeeze the soul out of my pencils, until they disappear into lines, hehe. So I make a sketch, something resembling a skull, which I then gradually add volume to. The reference image, as I mentioned before, is when Freddie Mercury appears in the Bohemian Rhapsody video.
En esta oportunidad el fondo es de color negro, es decir cartulina negra y para colorear pues un lápiz blanco. A mies lápices me gusta exprimirles el alma, hasta que se desaparezcan en trazos jeje. Así que hago un boceto, algo parecido a un cráneo que poco a poco luego hay que ir dando volumen. La imagen de referencia como dije anteriormente es cuando Freddie Mercury aparece el video de Bohemian Rhapsody.

When I draw in black and white, I do it in two layers. The first layer is a crayon, the kind used for school projects, and the other is a charcoal pastel white, which is more intense. So I start the first layer by gradually painting the skin part of the face.
Cuando hago los dibujos en blanco y negro yo los realizo en dos capas, la primera capa la hago con color de cera, el que se usa para cosas escolares y el otro color es un blanco pastel de carboncillo, el cual es más intenso. Así que comienzo la primera capa pintando poco a poco la parte de la piel del rostro.

Little by little, I'm painting the lower part of the face. It's interesting how the face can gradually emerge from a few simple lines. When I made the sketch, all those lines didn't make sense to me, but I could see a pattern to follow to give it shape, and by following that pattern, the face gradually emerges.
Poco a poco voy pintando la parte inferior del rostro, es interesante como de algunas simples líneas puede ir saliendo poco a poco el rostro. Cuando hice el boceto, todas esas líneas no tenían sentido para mi, sin embargo podía ver un patron el cual seguir para dar forma, y siguiendo ese patrón es que el rostro poco a poco va saliendo.

Next, I color in the lips and chin. Up to this point, you can see that the face can barely be illuminated by the light coming from above. I also add some hair on top and on the sides.
Luego voy coloreando la parte de los labios y la barbilla, hasta este punto se puede ver que el rostro apenas puede ser iluminado por la luz que viene de arriba. También voy agregando parte del cabello en la parte de arriba y también hacia los lados.

In the next step, I begin with what would be the second layer of paint, this time using white charcoal, as I mentioned before. I paint where I started with the previous color, namely the nose, and in this way, little by little, I cover the entire visible area of the face. In areas where the light is less intense, I use the wax color with very soft strokes, so that only the impression of low light is given. Finally, I outline the hair and what would be part of the eyes; since the light comes from above, only small parts are visible. And thus, this portrait is finished.
En el siguiende paso comienzo con lo que sería la segunda capa de pintura, en esta oportunidad como mencioné antes utilizando el color blanco de carboncillo. Voy pintando por donde había comenzado con el color anterior, es decir por la nariz, y así poco a poco voy cubriendo toda la zona visible del rostro. En aquellas partes donde la luz es menos intensa voy utilizando el color de cera con trazos muy suave, para que solo de la impresión de poca luz. Por último voy delineando el cabello y lo que serían parte de los ojos, que como la luz viene desde arriba solo se ven pequeñas partes, y así quedó finalizado este retrato.
FINAL WORK
What do you think of the final result? I think the white charcoal makes the photographic effect a little more visible, meaning it would have been more realistic using acrylic paint. But since I'm still drawing on cardboard, it was never my intention to use that type of paint. And you, do you like Queen? Have you ever heard Freddie Mercury sing? I think so. It's impossible not to know about this great legend. My favorite songs are "Somebody to Love," "I Want to Break Free," "Crazy Little Thing," and, obviously, "Bohemian Rhapsody." It's hard to have a favorite song with so many masterpieces, but when these songs play, for me it's like entering another dimension. For now, I'll say goodbye. I recommend you watch the movie; you won't regret it.
¿Qué opinan del resultado final? Pienso que con el color blanco de carboncillo, el efecto fotográfico es un poco más visible, quiere decir que utilizando pintura acrílica habría quedado más realista, pero como er aun dibujo en cartulina no fue nunca mi intención utilizar ese tipo de pintura. Y a ustedes, ¿Les gusta Queen? ¿Escucharon alguna vez cantar a Freddie Mercury? yo creo que si, es imposible no saber de esta gran leyenda, mis canciones favoritas son Somebody To love, I Wan To Break Free, Crazy Little Thing y por obvias razines Bohemian Rhapsody. Es dificil tener una canción favorita con tantas obras maestras, pero cuando estas canciones suenan, para mi es entrar a otra dimensión. Por ahora me despido, les recomiendo ver la película, no se arrepetirán.
