Just wrapping up my night's chapters, reading a physical copy of John Fante’s The Road to Los Angeles, I am pondering the question:
Does listening to an audiobook count as reading?
The science of comprehension
So the answer seems to be yes.
That for all practical purposes listening to an audiobook absolutely counts as reading.
Multiple studies have shown that listening to a story or text activates the same parts of your brain as reading it with your eyes.
Researchers have found no significant difference in comprehension between reading a book and listening to an audiobook.
Your brain is still processing language, building vocabulary, and following the narrative, regardless of whether the words are coming from a page or being spoken to you.
All that matters is whether you’re absorbing the content
Of course and whether you’re having fun doing it!
The purpose of reading is to consume a story, learn new information, or be transported to another world.
The medium through which you achieve that goal shouldn't diminish the experience.
Whether you read a physical book or listen to an audiobook online, the only thing that matters is the end result.
Whether you have engaged with the material, absorbed the ideas and have had a positive experience.
That's all good an well, but honestly I’m a physical book guy because I just can’t get past the feeling of being creeped out by strangers reading to me.
My personal thinking space being invaded by some old dude with a horribly deep voice….
No thanks!
Best of probabilities to you.
Dane.
