It’s all about forming a habit

I’m really enjoying my return to reading physical books.

But a comment on one of my blogs yesterday got me thinking about when I first started reading again and forming that new habit.

How hard it is to start that new habit, but then how easy it is once I got on a roll.

Starting a new habit

Reading 1 book every 2 weeks is my sweet spot.

That means it's not too long that I lose interest and still short enough that I feel a huge sense of accomplishment when I’m done.

So with that timeframe in mind, I divide the number of chapters in my book by 14 and get how many chapters per day I need to read.

Some books are 2 chapters a day, some are 4, depending on how long the chapters are.

Funnily enough, the books where I need to read 4 chapters a day are actually easier to read because the chapters are shorter.

All mind games with myself.

Once the habit is formed

Now I’ve formed the habit and got fully into the groove, reading has been so good for me.

Right now, I’m easily smashing through the 2 chapters a day.

Sometimes more because once I get on a roll and close to the end of a good book, then I obviously don’t want to stop and 2 chapters quickly becomes 4 or 6.

Just knocking days of my target.

And this small habit of 2 chapters a day means I’m easily knocking off (at least) 2 books a month.

That’s 24 books a year!!

Me of 2 years ago could not even comprehend this would be possible, so I’m super chuffed with myself.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Best of probabilities to you.

Dane.
